MTN Group, the biggest telecom provider in Africa, has surpassed 300 million users in all of its markets, marking a significant milestone.
Diplomats, government representatives, and business executives gathered at the company’s Ambassadors Appreciation Dinner on Wednesday to celebrate the accomplishment and reaffirm their dedication to furthering Africa’s digital transformation.
Turning point
Ralph Mupita, president and CEO of MTN Group, called the event a turning point in the company’s progress toward its Ambition 2025 objectives.
“The time is now for Africa to take charge of its own socioeconomic progress. We need to look within for solutions and to develop our own communities,” he said
Mupita praised MTN’s staff members, who are referred to as MTNers, for their commitment during the company’s yearly 21 Days of Y’ello Care volunteer campaign.
“Tonight, we celebrate our Y’ello Care employee volunteers and take inspiration from their can-do attitude. Their dedication has led the Group to meet a strategic milestone, serving more than 300 million customers just three decades since our first commercial operation in South Africa,” he stated.
With the theme “Connecting at the Roots: Connecting communities through the use of digital tools,” the 2025 Y’ello Care campaign demonstrated how the workforce of the massive mobile operator continues to empower communities through creativity and teamwork.
MTN Group chief sustainability and corporate affairs officer Nompilo Morafo went on to say that Y’ello Care is a perfect example of MTN’s belief that everyone should have access to the advantages of a contemporary, connected life.
“Progress is built through people, our ideas, commitment and compassion. I am grateful to MTNers, partners and community collaborators who continue to bring this belief to life,” she said.
Honouring of regional MTN operations
On the Group’s celebration night, regional MTN operations were also recognised for their outstanding projects, such as MTN Uganda’s solar-powered health and education programs, MTN Cameroon’s digitalcentress, and MTN Eswatini’s Government in Your Hand e-governance initiative.
Mupita reiterated MTN’s commitment to advancing Agenda 2063’s vision of an inclusive, connected, and resilient Africa and thanked the African diplomatic community for creating an environment that is conducive to investment.
“Partnership and purpose remain the pillars of our progress. This milestone belongs to every African who believes in a brighter digital future.”
