MTN has officially launched the first commercial 5G network in Benin, marking a significant milestone in the country’s telecommunications landscape. This launch, which took place on November 22, 2024, aligns with MTN’s 25th anniversary in Benin and reinforces its leadership in the sector.

“We are honoured to bring 5G to Benin, a technology that will catalyse progress in countless areas of life and business. With 5G, we are laying the foundation for innovation, economic growth, and opportunities to empower individuals and communities,” said Uche Ofodile, CEO of MTN Benin.

For instance, farmers can leverage real-time data for better crop management, while healthcare providers can enhance access to services through telemedicine. This technological leap is poised to attract foreign investments and create new job opportunities within the country.

Competitive landscape

MTN’s launch intensifies competition in Benin’s telecom market. As the first operator to offer commercial 5G services, MTN will likely draw a more extensive customer base seeking improved connectivity.

This competitive edge may prompt other telecom companies like Moov Africa and Celtiis to expedite their own 5G deployment plans. Increased competition could lead to better service offerings and more affordable consumer pricing, fostering a dynamic market environment.

MTN’s investment of $215 million over three years aims to modernise infrastructure and support the rollout of 5G services. This strategic move not only positions Benin as a technological leader in West Africa but also sets the stage for future innovations that could reshape the region’s digital landscape.
