MTN MoMo and the Uganda Hotel Owners’ Association (UHOA) unveiled a strategic partnership on Friday, 1st August 2025, poised to revolutionise digital payments and ICT services in Uganda’s hospitality industry.
This collaboration will enable over 780 hotels under UHOA’s membership to adopt MTN MoMo’s mobile money solutions alongside tailored digital tools.
By integrating mobile payments for bookings, bill settlements, and guest services, the partnership aims to increase convenience and efficiency across Uganda’s tourism sector.
Driving digital payments adoption in Uganda’s hotels
The partnership heralds a new era for Uganda’s hospitality sector by embedding digital financial services at the core of hotel operations.
MTN MoMo’s General Manager Corporate Services, Dennis Kakonge, remarked, “Hotels will now be able to cater to both local and international guests using modern payment options, backed by MTN MoMo’s reliability and reach.”
Apart from facilitating seamless transactions, MTN Uganda’s Enterprise Business Unit will provide affordable internet connectivity, guest Wi-Fi, and cloud-based business software solutions for the hospitality environment.
UHOA Chairperson Susan Muhwezi highlighted the importance of technology for competitiveness: “With MTN Uganda and MTN MoMo, we are opening doors to cutting-edge technology, seamless payment systems, and digital infrastructure that our members can leverage to stay competitive in a fast-evolving market.”
The initiative coincides with the UHOA Expo 2025 held at Hotel Africana from August 1st to 3rd, celebrating 25 years of UHOA and spotlighting innovative hospitality technologies.
Supporting Uganda’s growing tourism economy
Tourism is a vital pillar of Uganda’s economy, with the hospitality sector employing nearly 70 per cent of the workforce in this segment.
By digitalising payment systems and connectivity, the MTN-UHOA alliance aims to improve operational efficiency and customer experience, which are vital for attracting business and leisure travellers.
Ibrahim Senyonga, MTN Uganda’s General Manager of Enterprise Business, emphasised the role of partnerships in Uganda’s digital transformation, stating, “We reaffirm our commitment to supporting innovation, customer experience, and economic development through digital inclusion”.
This partnership represents a strategic step in MTN’s Ambition 2025 transition from a telecommunications provider to a technology company. By bringing robust fintech services into the hospitality market, MTN MoMo enhances payment ease and empowers businesses to harness digital solutions tailored to their needs.
As the partnership develops, further engagements with stakeholders like the Uganda Tourism Board will likely expand its impact across the tourism sector.
This bold collaboration highlights how digital payments can accelerate Uganda’s hospitality industry’s growth and modernisation, shaping a more connected and tech-savvy future for hotels nationwide.
