MTN has obtained a new operating licence in South Sudan for a period of 15 years, the telecom operator announced in a statement on Saturday.

The company said the licence represents a substantial advancement in bringing its operations into line with South Sudan’s changing legal and regulatory environment.

It demonstrates the company’s steadfast dedication to the advancement of the country and its faith in the leadership of the South Sudanese government.  Important responsibilities brought forth by this new licence will directly help the South Sudanese people.

Part of the statement reads, “We are energised by the opportunity to significantly enhance service quality, expand our network coverage to reach even more communities, and drive meaningful innovation in the digital space.”

This long-term commitment enables the company to proactively plan and invest in the technologies and infrastructure that will drive connection in South Sudan in the future.

It added, “We extend our sincere gratitude to the Government of South Sudan for their support and trust in MTN South Sudan. This partnership is essential as we work together to build a digitally inclusive and empowered South Sudan.”

The company’s commitment to playing a significant role in facilitating South Sudan’s economic and social growth over the next 15 years and beyond is reaffirmed by this licence, which goes beyond simple licensing.

The telecommunications company expresses its enthusiasm about the future. It said, “We are excited about the journey ahead and the positive impact we will continue to make.”

Bank of South Sudan’s Governor lauds MTN MoMo for accelerating financial inclusion

In a related development, Governor of the Bank of South Sudan, Hon. Johnny Ohisa Damian, has praised MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) for its important role in promoting financial inclusion in South Sudan.

Speaking at a meeting on Thursday in the Governor’s office, Hon. Damain stated his complete support for MTN MoMo’s continued efforts to digitise payments in the Republic and his sincere want to see all South Sudanese actively using the MoMo platform.

In order to make sure that even people in remote regions accept MoMo as an easy-to-use and effective instrument for managing their finances, the governor underlined the significance of expanding awareness and education campaigns and urged MTN MoMo to step up these efforts.

The CEO of MTN Fintech, Mr. Francis Matseketsa, gave an update on the significant advancements made since MoMo was granted an operating licence in January 2024.

Mr. Matseketsa emphasised the creation of strong governance structures, such as the creation of a specific Fintech Board after the fintech operations were strategically separated from MTN South Sudan’s main telecom division.

Additionally, Mr. Matseketsa pleaded with the Governor to help speed up the betting companies’ licensing procedure.  He clarified that the government might greatly benefit from the broad implementation of MoMo in terms of effective tax collection from these organisations.

The cash flow issues that vital service providers like the Juba Electricity Distribution Company (JEDCO) are currently facing were also brought up by the Fintech CEO.  He underlined that allowing consumers to easily buy electricity through MoMo will offer a much-needed remedy for these issues.
