MTN South Africa and Ericsson have achieved a milestone by completing the Ericsson Packet Core Gateway node’s first In-Service Software Upgrade (ISSU), marking a world-first in 5G core network upgrades.

This upgrade is part of MTN South Africa’s commitment to modernise its core network for 5G standalone architecture and increased data needs. The project aligns with MTN Group’s Unified Cloud Acceleration framework and uses cloud-native dual-mode 5G Core capabilities to improve South African network performance and efficiency.

5G core network modernisation drives enhanced connectivity

MTN South Africa’s Chief Technology Officer, Rami Farah, highlighted that this upgrade extends a longstanding partnership with Ericsson, ensuring that the network is ready for strong data growth and the full benefits of 5G standalone technology.

“The partnership will enable MTN SA to modernise further and upgrade the core mobile network in line with MTN Group Unified Cloud Acceleration principles,” Farah said, emphasising the strategic importance of this milestone for delivering superior customer experiences.

Ericsson’s cloud-native 5G core solutions are central to this transformation. By providing advanced 5G Evolved Packet Core and user data management, Ericsson supports MTN South Africa’s move towards faster, more reliable mobile broadband services. This upgrade strengthens MTN’s shared infrastructure and prepares the network to handle critical applications like fixed wireless access and the Internet of Things (IoT) across South African industries.

Strategic partnership fuels network innovation

The deal solidifies Ericsson’s role as the exclusive core network modernisation vendor for MTN South Africa over five years, building on existing collaborations in cloud-native core deployments.

Mazen Mroué, MTN Group’s Chief Technology and Information Officer, said, “We are embarking on a strategic transformation programme to modernise and upgrade our core network infrastructure, signifying a commitment to enhancing network performance and efficiency in respective markets.”

This ongoing modernisation effort reflects MTN’s commitment to innovation and leadership in African telecom.

MTN’s upgraded 5G core network will support millions of South Africans with enhanced mobile connectivity, offering new opportunities for consumers and enterprises. This cooperation with Ericsson keeps the network competitive in Africa’s fast-changing digital market and sets standards for telecom infrastructure upgrades.
