MTN Uganda and its Mobile Money (MoMo) subsidiary are collaborating closely with the government to fast-track the country’s digital transformation through financial inclusion programs and jointly developed digital solutions.

The MTN ICT Government Round Table, held on Thursday at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel, convened leading government officials and business leaders. The event was organised by MTN Uganda in partnership with the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance.

MoMo CEO Richard Yego described the meeting as a major milestone for Uganda’s National Digital Transformation Roadmap. “This was more than just a meeting. It was a powerful moment of alignment.”

Digitising key government services

The roundtable brought together ministry representatives, ICT executives, and senior policymakers to discuss and agree on common objectives for digitising important public and government services.

Yego emphasised how important collaborative efforts are for bringing about change. “Public-private collaboration isn’t optional, it’s essential. We are co-creating digital solutions with ministries and agencies. The work is already underway from digitised school fees to smart agriculture payments and integrated e-government services,” he stated.

Sylvia Mulinge, CEO of MTN Uganda, reiterated the role of cooperation in advancing financial inclusion.

“We’re working on how to support financial inclusion. We want to make it easier to collect payments and just as easy to track how that money flows, so everything becomes more efficient and more transparent,” she said.

Beyond mobile money

Ibrahim Senyonga, general manager of MTN Uganda’s Enterprise Business Unit, also emphasised that the transformation extends beyond mobile money.

“We are not just a telco. We are now a full technology partner, shaping solutions that power institutions, connect systems, and unlock potential across every sector,” said Senyonga.

UCC launches nationwide anti-vandalism campaign “TOKIGEZA”

On Tuesday, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), alongside MTN Uganda, Airtel Uganda, and ATC Uganda, launched a nationwide campaign to combat vandalism targeting telecom infrastructure.

Named “TOKIGEZA” (Luganda for “Don’t do it”), the campaign follows a presidential directive promising swift action against vandalism. The theme, “Stop the Disruption. Protect Your Connection,” stems from the National Telecom Stakeholder Forum on Vandalism held last year

MTN Uganda’s nationwide network upgrade

MTN Uganda announced last week the launch of a massive nationwide network upgrade to improve voice, data, and mobile money services and give consumers a seamless online experience.

The three-month program, which ends in July 2025, is a crucial component of the business’s larger plan to improve customer satisfaction nationwide and fortify digital connectivity.

MTN Uganda’s CEO, Sylvia Mulinge, emphasised that the upgrade was about empowering daily life rather than just improving technology.

“This upgrade is about transforming the daily digital experiences of millions of Ugandans. From students streaming lectures to entrepreneurs managing mobile transactions, our enhanced network will enable every individual to reach their full potential. Together, our network is unstoppable,” Mulinge said.
