To improve cooperation and mutual understanding of the regulatory procedures in the communications industry, the National Communications Authority (NCA) and the Electronic Communications Tribunal (ECT) engaged in a knowledge-sharing session at the NCA Tower in Accra on September 3rd and 4th, 2025.
During a brief opening ceremony, Mrs. Etta Mosore, the Deputy Director General in charge of Managerial Operations, said that engagement is essential to giving Tribunal members a better understanding of the NCA’s regulatory procedures and is part of the organisation’s strategic plan.
“We are here to support and ready to provide all the information needed on the issues you may require,” she said.
Importance of the engagement
In his remarks, ECT Chairman Mr. Victor Anku-Tsede also emphasized the importance of the engagement, saying that although the Authority may not always agree with the Tribunal’s decisions, the sector benefits from the engagement’s transparency.
He went on to say that the Tribunal appreciates the chance to learn about the NCA’s operations, especially concerning regulatory penalties, service measurement, and consumer protection, since these viewpoints will improve their work and enrich their discussions.
The knowledge-sharing session is a component of the NCA’s continuous efforts to promote openness, fortify institutional cooperation, and guarantee that decisions made in the electronic communications sector are based on justice, responsibility, and a thorough comprehension of industry standards.
Members of the ECT, including Dr. Tony Bediako, and some Tribunal administrative staff, were present.
NCA deepens collaboration with mobile money agents to enhance service delivery
Last week, Executives from the Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana (MMAAG) also met with Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko, the Director General of the National Communications Authority (NCA), with the goal of enhancing cooperation and tackling important issues impacting the activities of mobile money agents throughout the nation.
With more than 12,000 Agents nationwide, the Association, led by General Secretary Mr Evans Otumfuor, emphasised the critical role that agents play in the financial ecosystem while voicing concerns about urgent issues that impact their work.
These included the increasing risk of mobile money fraud and cyberattacks, the challenges associated with cross-platform mobile transactions, the excessive SIM card prices charged by specific agents and resellers, and the frequent network outages that impede seamless transactions.
The Executives also emphasised the necessity of closer cooperation with the NCA in forming policies and implementations that impact their industry and asked for clarification on the impending SIM Registration Exercise that the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations had announced.
The Director-General responded by recognising the importance of the issues and assuring the delegation that the NCA would take care of those within its purview. He clarified that the Authority is collaborating closely with the National Identification Authority (NIA) to guarantee that the next SIM registration procedure is smooth and easy to use and will address the shortcomings found in the last exercise.
Addressing cybersecurity threats
Rev. Ing. Fianko urged the Association to work with the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) on the cyber fraud issue as part of a larger strategy to address security threats in the digital financial services industry.
He reaffirmed the Authority’s willingness to include the Association in its upcoming projects and assured the Association that the NCA would look into the other issues to find long-term solutions.
At the end of the meeting, both parties pledged to increase cooperation to boost customer confidence, enhance service delivery, and secure the mobile money ecosystem for all stakeholders.
Some NCA management members and Mr. Sulemana Salifu, the Deputy Director General in Technical Operations, attended the meeting.
