Netflix, a well-known video streaming service, has raised the price of its premium monthly subscription plan in Nigeria by 21.4 percent. The plan, which was previously priced at ₦7,000, is now ₦8,500 as of July 4, 2025.
Information on the company’s website indicates that the Standard plan subscription, which provides multi-screen viewing options and HD quality, has increased from ₦5,500 to ₦6,500, an increase of 18.18 percent. While Netflix’s cheapest subscription plan, Mobile, increased 13.64 percent from ₦2,200 to ₦2,500, the Basic plan, previously ₦3,500, has increased by 14.29 per cent to ₦4,000.
According to the streaming behemoth, the price change was a component of a larger plan to update its subscription costs in different areas. The changes, it continued, were intended to boost revenue and earnings growth, continuing a trend of sporadic price increases to fund the growth of content offerings.
Netflix’s series of subscription fees increase
There have been three increases in the last few months. The most recent increase in Netflix’s premium package was 40 percent, from ₦5,000 to ₦7,000, in July 2024.
Next, Netflix Mobile, the cheapest subscription package, increased by 83 per cent, from ₦1,200 to ₦2,200. The Basic plan, on the other hand, saw the lowest increment rate, with a 21 percent increase from ₦2,900 to the current price of ₦3,500. The company previously raised the price in April 2024, and this increase follows those three months.
Although the price increase in Nigeria was expected, given comparable events in other nations, the changes put additional financial strain on Nigerians, who already have low purchasing power.
Subscription fees increase in South Africa
After the company raised prices last month, customers in South Africa now pay between 13 percent and 20 percent more for Netflix subscription plans than they did at the end of April 2025.
Netflix clarified that the change will take effect in June despite not releasing a statement regarding the development. According to the company, the price increase in South Africa is due to local taxes, inflation, service enhancements, and new platform features.
“Plans and pricing may change as we continue to improve our service and add more TV shows and movies. Adjustments can also happen in response to local market changes, such as changes to local taxes or inflation,” Netflix said.
Netflix Standard, for example, increased by 13 per cent from $8.81 (R159) to $9.92 (R179), while the Mobile plan experienced its first-ever price increase of 20 per cent, from $2.71 (R49) to $3.2 (R59). Also, Netflix Premium users saw a 15 per cent increase in price from $11 (R199) to $12.68 (R229), while the basic plan stayed at R99 per month.
This price change marks the second time Netflix has raised its rates in South Africa since its January 2016 global debut. When Netflix last raised its South African prices in October 2021, it claimed that the increase was due to service quality improvements.
Subscription price increases in other countries
The price hikes are also not unique to South Africa and Nigeria. In January 2025, during its quarterly results, Netflix announced price increases in the US, Canada, Argentina, and Portugal. Later, in February, it declared a price increase for the UK, and in April, New Zealanders had to pay more.
The ad-supported tier was raised from $6.99 to $7.99 per month, and the standard ad-free tier was raised from $15.49 to $17.99 per month. This is the first change since October 2023. The monthly price of the most expensive premium tier has also gone up from $22.99 to $24.99.
