Nigeria and Algeria are set to enhance regional air travel connectivity by launching a new flight route under the Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA). Scheduled to commence on April 6, this initiative marks a significant step in strengthening diplomatic and economic relations between the two nations.

The agreement was confirmed during a meeting in Abuja between Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and the Algerian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mezoued Hosine.

Economic and travel benefits of the new air route

Introducing this route aims to address existing travel challenges within West and North Africa. Currently, passengers travelling between Nigeria and Algeria often face long layovers and detours through third countries. The new direct flight service will significantly cut travel time, reduce costs, and improve convenience for business and leisure travellers.

Minister Keyamo lauded the initiative, acknowledging the route’s potential to bolster economic ties, enhance trade cooperation, and simplify business engagements. He pledged Nigeria’s support in ensuring a seamless approval process and emphasised the importance of strengthening aviation connectivity with key international destinations.

Beyond Nigeria and Algeria, the route will also serve as a strategic link for travellers heading to Douala, Cameroon. Improved connectivity between these nations is expected to stimulate tourism, enhance investment opportunities, and foster regional collaboration. The route will provide a much-needed alternative to current travel routes that often require overnight stays in transit countries.

A strategic move for regional aviation growth

The launch of the Algiers-Abuja-Douala route is a testament to both Nigeria and Algeria’s commitment to improving air travel accessibility and fostering closer regional ties. As Algeria continues to expand its aviation footprint in Africa, this partnership with Nigeria opens new avenues for diplomatic and commercial
collaboration.

Both nations recognise that enhanced connectivity is crucial for economic integration across Africa. The agreement aligns with broader continental efforts to improve infrastructure and streamline air travel, benefiting not just Nigeria and Algeria but also travellers and businesses across the region. With a shared vision for aviation growth, this development is set to create long-term economic and strategic advantages for multiple African nations.
