Representing Nigeria during this historic signing was the Minister of Innovation, Science & Technology, Uche Nnaji, while Cuba was represented by its Minister of Science, Technology, and Environment, Elba Montoya. This symbolic act of cooperation was made possible by the visionary leadership of President Bola Tinubu, whose commitment to diplomatic engagement laid the foundation for this significant agreement.

Minister Uche Nnaji expressed Nigeria’s determination to fully leverage the opportunities presented by this bilateral agreement. He emphasized that the practical implementation of the pact would commence promptly, and dedicated mechanisms would be established to chart a comprehensive program of action.

Nigeria’s Emphasis on South-South Cooperation

Vice President Shettima underscored Nigeria’s strong belief in the potential of South-South cooperation as a powerful platform for promoting sustainable development across the global South. He highlighted that the essence of this bilateral agreement would be focused on Research and Development (R&D) and the nurturing of human resources, thus deepening the collaborative partnership between Nigeria and Cuba.

Before the commencement of the G77+China Summit, Vice President Shettima had communicated to his Cuban counterpart, Salvador Mesa, Nigeria’s intent to utilize the gathering as an opportunity to establish crucial Memorandums of Understanding with Cuba. These agreements, which span vital sectors such as agriculture, scientific research, and technological development, underscore the shared vision of both countries in advancing mutual interests and contributing to global development.
