The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) and the Dubai International Financial Centre Authority (DIFCA) on Tuesday signed an agreement to promote cross-border data transfers.

Lori Baker, Vice President of Data Protection and Regulatory Compliance at the Dubai Data Privacy Body, and the NDPC team led by National Commissioner/CEO Vincent Olatunji had previously met in October 2024 before signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The NDPC and DIFCA talked about the value of international cooperation in promoting cross-border data transfers, enforcement, and mutual legal aid during this high-level meeting.

The signing of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, and its extraterritorial reach were underlined by Dr Olatunji in his remarks, where he extensively discussed the value of international cooperation and collaboration in investigations, information exchange, and capacity building.

Through the creation of effective procedures for cross-border data transfers, expertise sharing, reciprocal legal support, and the exchange of best practices, the MoU seeks to improve collaboration between the NDPC and DIFCA.
