Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Education have partnered to provide free digital skills training and certification to teachers and students in tertiary institutions across the country

The initiative was announced in a post on the education ministry’s X account on Saturday as part of continuous efforts to increase access to 21st-century skills under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The programme will focus on high-demand digital competencies, including cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning.

According to the Ministry, certification will be provided at no cost, jointly covered by AWS and the government.

The statement reads, “The Federal Ministry of Education has teamed up with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to launch a free digital skills programme for students and educators, covering cloud computing, AI, machine learning, and more”

It further stated, “Under the Renewed Hope Agenda, the programme will be rolled out to all federal, state, and private tertiary institutions. The best part? Certification is 100% free, split between the Ministry and AWS.”

Implementation started

According to the Ministry, implementation has already started in federal schools and is growing rapidly.

“Already live in 43 federal universities & polytechnics, the programme is expanding fast. Schools can now register coordinators to kickstart training. Don’t miss out, sign up now,” they said

The Ministry urged school administrators to designate program coordinators in order to expand participation to additional institutions.

The Ministry directed Vice Chancellors, Rectors, and Provosts of public and private tertiary institutions to provide information about designated coordinators by the registration deadline, which is Friday, July 19th, 2025, at 5 PM.

“The Office of the Honourable Minister kindly asks all Vice Chancellors, Rectors and Provosts of Private and State Tertiary Institutions to fill in the below form with the details of your appointed Coordinator by or before Friday,19th July 2025, 5 PM PROMPT,” the ministry stated

$40 million’s University ICT infrastructure

In a similar development, Techpression reported on Friday that the Nigerian government has unveiled a $40 million ICT project to transform digital education in 10 federal universities nationwide.

Launched on Tuesday, this initiative is set to revolutionise tertiary education by integrating advanced digital infrastructure and innovative learning environments, backed by the French Government through the Agence Française de Développement (AFD).

The Blueprint ICT Development (Blueprint-ICT-Dev) Project focuses on upgrading ICT facilities, enabling hybrid learning, and improving education data systems for better policy decisions.

Education Minister Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa described the project as “a strategic investment in the future of Nigerian education. It’s about building smart campuses, empowering smart people, and nurturing smart ideas.”

The project will promote teacher training, technical and vocational education, and digital skills development.

It includes two components: $38 million for ICT upgrades in the selected universities and $2 million for developing a National STEM Transformation Strategy involving pilot STEM initiatives and labour market research.
