The National Population Census for 2023 is set to be a groundbreaking event for Nigeria with the acquisition of the Personal Digital Assistant (PDA).

With preparations spanning over nine years and an expenditure of ₦200 billion, the National Population Commission has been working tirelessly to ensure the success of the upcoming census.

Faced with significant hurdles in justifying the expenditure of ₦200 billion, the Commission clarified that the sum had been allocated over a nine-year period, specifically dedicated to the preparations for the Population and Housing Census, which was initially scheduled for May.

The allocated funds are a fraction of the ₦800 billion required to conduct the first-ever digital census in Nigeria.

The Personal Digital Assistant (PDA)

One of the most crucial acquisitions made during this period is the Personal Digital Assistant (PDA).

Undoubtedly, it is the most significant hardware acquisition for the 2023 Census.

The Commission recognizes its importance in facilitating data collection and streamlining the census process. With 810,000 copies of this device procured, the Commission aims to empower census workers and enhance the accuracy and efficiency of data collection.

Enhancing Efficiency and Accuracy

The introduction of PDAs in the census process promises to revolutionize data collection. These devices allow census workers to gather information accurately and swiftly, eliminating the need for traditional paper-based methods.

Equipped with advanced features such as geolocation tracking and data synchronization capabilities, PDAs ensure real-time data collection and reduce errors.

The Commission anticipates that this technology will contribute significantly to producing reliable and comprehensive census results.

The Path to a Digital Census

Transitioning from traditional methods to a digital census has been a progressive and transformative journey for the Nigeria National Population Commission.

The process involved extensive planning, capacity building, and technological advancements. By embracing digital solutions, the Commission aims to enhance data collection’s accuracy, speed, and transparency, ultimately providing policymakers and stakeholders with valuable insights for informed decision-making.

Challenges and Justifications

The Commission has faced scrutiny regarding the expenditure of ₦200 billion over nine years. However, it asserts that these funds were essential for a successful digital census. The allocated budget facilitated critical aspects of preparation, including technology procurement, infrastructure development, training programs, and public awareness campaigns. These investments have not only paved the way for the 2023 Census but also laid the foundation for future data collection endeavours.

Looking Ahead

As the National Population Census for 2023 draws near, the National Population Commission remains committed to executing a seamless and accurate census. The utilization of PDAs is a testament to their determination to leverage technology for efficiency and reliability.

The Commission’s extensive preparations for the 2023 Census have been guided by a vision of progress and innovation. The acquisition of 810,000 Personal Digital Assistants stands also as a testament to their commitment to embracing technology for accurate data collection.

This upcoming census marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s data collection journey and holds the potential to revolutionize policymaking, resource allocation, and national development initiatives.

As Nigeria prepares for its first digital census, the Commission’s endeavours have set the stage for a transformative milestone in the nation’s history. Through meticulous planning, justifications for expenditure, and technological advancements, the National Population Commission is poised to deliver a census that provides valuable insights and shapes the future of the country.
