Imagine being unable to access your favourite online services because of a malicious attack. This is precisely what Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks aim to do—overwhelm networks with traffic to disrupt services.

To combat this, the London Internet Exchange (LINX) has taken a proactive step by partnering with Nokia to implement advanced DDoS protection using Nokia Deepfield.

This collaboration was announced on Monday, marking a new era in cybersecurity for LINX members.

LINX, a global Internet Exchange Point, is now the first UK-based IXP to offer such advanced protection, ensuring minimal impact on member connectivity and services.

This move comes as DDoS attacks have become more frequent and sophisticated, with networks experiencing over 100 daily attacks, according to Nokia’s Threat Intelligence Report.

Implementing advanced DDoS protection

Nokia Deepfield provides a robust defence strategy through its Deepfield Defender, which combines real-time network telemetry with Nokia’s patented Deepfield Secure Genome. This approach allows for AI-driven DDoS detection and mitigation, ensuring attacks are blocked before affecting LINX members.

Paul Alexander, VP and Country General Manager of UK&I at Nokia, noted, “The past year has accelerated massive and transformative changes to the internet, bringing with it an incredible rise in DDoS attacks – they are more potent, frequent, and sophisticated than ever”.

Benefits for LINX members

Mike Hellers, Head of Product Development at LINX, emphasised the benefits of this partnership,”With Nokia Deepfield, LINX will gain cyber security capabilities. We are proud to be the first UK IXP to deliver this next generation of advanced DDoS protection to our members, which, in turn, will be providing essential or critical services to their customers”.

This advanced protection enhances security and ensures that services remain uninterrupted, which is crucial for members providing essential services.

Integrating Nokia Deepfield’s technology into LINX’s network is part of a broader effort to enhance cybersecurity across the internet exchange ecosystem. As DDoS attacks continue to evolve, collaborations like this will be essential in maintaining the integrity and reliability of online services.
