OpenAI has made a big move in education by offering a free online course for teachers in grades K–12.
Announced on Wednesday, the project aims to equip teachers with the requisite skills required to use AI tools, especially ChatGPT, effectively in their classrooms.
As artificial intelligence continues to spread through society, teachers must know how to use these tools to improve learning. By providing this training, OpenAI seeks not only to empower teachers but also to foster a more informed and responsible approach to AI in education.

Course overview
The course, “ChatGPT Foundations for K-12 Educators,” is a collaboration between OpenAI and Common Sense Media. It seeks to explain artificial intelligence and give educators useful tactics for incorporating it into their lesson plans. The course is designed to be accessible and can be completed in under an hour.
Leah Belsky, Vice President and General Manager of Education at OpenAI, emphasised the importance of this initiative, stating, “We’re in the early stages of AI adoption in K-12, and it will take all of us—educators, technologists, and organisations—working together to ensure this technology enables teachers and improves learning outcomes for students.”
Key features of the training
The training program covers several essential topics:
AI Fundamentals: Educators will learn the basics of artificial intelligence and its educational applications.
Data Privacy and Ethical Usage: The course addresses data privacy issues and ethical considerations when using AI tools.
Practical Applications: Teachers will explore various ways to leverage ChatGPT for lesson planning, grading, and creating personalised learning materials.
According to OpenAI, early feedback from pilot programs indicates that 98 percent of participants reported gaining new ideas or strategies they could apply in their teaching.

Addressing concerns
While introducing AI tools in education presents many opportunities, it also raises concerns among educators. Some teachers worry about the potential for misuse, such as cheating or plagiarism.
Les Warwick, a sports lecturer at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, expressed his apprehensions: “Resources like OpenAI are normalising the use of AI among teachers. Not everyone knows the ethical implications of this still- new technology.”
In response to these concerns, the training includes modules on using AI responsibly and avoiding common pitfalls. The course emphasises that educators must know the limitations and biases inherent in generative AI technologies.
Availability
The course is free on the Common Sense Media website and does not require a subscription to ChatGPT Edu. This marks the first public collaboration between OpenAI and Common Sense Media, and additional resources and training sessions are planned in the future.
OpenAI’s initiative reflects a growing recognition among educators of the need for comprehensive training in AI literacy. As technology evolves rapidly, equipping teachers with the necessary tools and knowledge will be crucial for fostering an effective learning environment.
