In an unexpected move, OpenAI reinstalled departing co-founder Sam Altman as CEO. Bret Taylor will chair the revamped board, which includes Larry Summers and Adam D’Angelo.

Minutes ago, the company’s official X account announced it. The statement claims it is currently determining how to bring back the prior leadership.

This choice was made because more than 75% of OpenAI’s employees demanded that Altman be reinstated after he was fired without cause. Employees of OpenAI, which started with 505 and later grew to over 700 critical people in the company, gave the board an ultimatum: all of them would quit unless Altman and President Greg Brockman were restored.

Concerns about the board’s skills and how the recent leadership changes might affect the company’s goal and stability were raised in a strong statement.

According to some, Sam Altman’s promise to return to his old job, stay with his team, and build on the wins they have already had together may prove that he has been reinstated.

This deal is a big deal for OpenAI. It could mean a return to stability and allow Altman to regain his leadership role, building on his essential part in the company’s groundbreaking work in AI safety, governance, and product development.

Sam Altman, OpenAI debate ends?

According to a statement from the board, the recent mess at OpenAI started when Sam Altman was fired suddenly as CEO because of problems with communicating clearly.

A lot of bad things happened at the company, like a massive protest from employees, the hiring of an interim CEO (Mira Murati) and her replacement by Emmett Shear, who used to be the CEO of Twitch, and Microsoft’s announcement that it would be adding former OpenAI executives to its advanced AI research team.

After the board fired Sam Altman as CEO on the previous day, the five-day dispute began. After carefully assessing, the board concluded that Altman’s inconsistent communications hindered its duties.

The corporate announcement states, “The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI.” After her resignation, Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati will serve as interim CEO while the company searches for a permanent CEO.

The Information stated that OpenAI appointed former Twitch CEO Emmett Shear as interim CEO. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella tweeted that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman had joined a new advanced AI research team, an unexpected move.

But in a brave and unprecedented move, 505 (later over 700) OpenAI employees, or more than 75% of the company’s staff, gave the board of directors an ultimatum: all of them would quit if the former CEO, Sam Altman, and President, Greg Brockman, were not reinstated.

The situation that had been going on for too long ended, with Sam being brought back and the original leaders taking charge.

This deal is a big deal for OpenAI. It could mean a return to stability and allow Altman to regain his leadership role, building on his essential part in the company’s groundbreaking work in AI safety, governance, and product development.
