Retailer Pick n Pay has announced the release of an app Pick n Pay Mobile, to support its mobile virtual network operator (MVNO). The app provides instant eSIM activation and an improved rewards program.

Benefits of PnP Mobile for customers

The app offers a number of new self-service features, including instant eSIM activation and a self-RICA process that eliminates the need for customers to visit a store for activation, according to Pick n Pay.

Deven Moodley, executive head of value-added services, financial services, and mobile at Pick n Pay, said in a statement on Tuesday that the new app was created to give customers convenience, control, and value.

He said, “The new app has been designed to provide an experience that puts convenience, control and value in the customer’s hands,”

“With the new eSim capability, users can sign up on the go; there is no need for an additional Sim to receive the benefits that Pick n Pay Mobile offers.”

The retailer claimed that the new app enables prepaid customers to manage their mobile spending “without the traditional inconvenience of having to do so in person at the till point every month” by enabling them to create their own mobile plan.

In an effort to “give more data, more airtime, and more voice at affordable prices,” PnP Mobile has also slashed prices across its offering in tandem with the app launch. The action was taken in the face of growing competition in the MVNO market, including from Spar Group and other retailers.

Pick n Pay’s comparison with other retailers

Spar Mobile connects mobile rewards to in-store purchases, which is comparable to Pick n Pay’s offering. Other MVNOs offered by grocery stores are Boxercom, which is owned by the Pick n Pay subsidiary Boxer, and Shoprite Knect Mobile.

Pick n Pay Mobile was introduced in 2020, and according to the retailer, its free rewards connected to the Pick n Pay Smart Shopper loyalty program have made the MVNO popular with its customers. For every R1 spent with Pick n Pay in-store, PnP Mobile users automatically receive 1 MB of free data when they reload with at least R20 in airtime or data.

Pick n Pay and the enablement platform (MVNE) Huge NXTGN collaborated to launch its new app and MVNO services. MVNEs give MVNO clients the technology they need to operate their mobile services.
