The Gambia Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) has embarked on a statewide walk to gather firsthand information on telecoms network coverage and inspect telecommunications infrastructure (mast and towers) across the country in order to guarantee compliance with regulatory standards.

The team had the opportunity to gather firsthand information on the availability of certain recommended standards such as reflective painting, telecom tower red safety light, grounding, and lightning protection for all towers and masts during the nationwide outreach, which ran from March to April 2022.

Following that, the Authority will review the findings and prepare a report with recommendations for improving the quality of network services provided to the public, which will be shared with the operators. This Quality of Service (QoS) will be regularly monitored using the recently upgraded QoS monitoring system to verify that the suggestions given are followed.

What PURA intends To Achieve With Its New Telecommunication Infrastructure Improvement Drive

The Authority’s newly acquired equipment was put to good use and had a noticeable impact.

The Authority intends to continue such efforts on a regular basis in order to provide better services to the public and to discover long-term solutions to some of the difficulties that telecom consumers face, regardless of their location.

The Authority was also able to evaluate the quality of utility services such as internet download speed, GSM signal quality, network coverage, call drop rate, and call set-up success rate by an operator using various technologies during the visit (2G, 3G and 4G LTE).

As a result, the Authority will examine the findings and issue a report to the operators with recommendations aimed at improving the quality of network services provided to the general public. This Quality of Service (QoS) will be regularly monitored using the recently upgraded QoS monitoring system to verify that the suggestions given are followed.

The Authority’s newly purchased new equipment was put to work and had a significant impact. The Authority will continue to conduct such operations on a regular basis in order to provide better services and solutions to the entire Gambia population, regardless of their location.

About PURA

PURA (Provision of Urban Amenities to Rural Areas) is an Indian rural development plan. Former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam proposed this idea and explored it in his book Target 3 Billion, which he co-authored with Srijan Pal Singh. The origins of PURA can be traced back to Nimbkar Agricultural Research Institute’s work on Taluka energy self-sufficiency in the early 1990s. The study found that energy self-sufficient talukas can be a new development model for rural India in terms of employment generation and improved living conditions for its people.

To generate economic prospects outside of cities, PURA suggests that urban infrastructure and services be offered in rural areas. To achieve economic connectedness, physical connectivity through roads, electronic connectivity through communication networks, and intellectual connectivity through the establishment of professional and technical institutions must all be done in concert. Since 2004, the Indian federal government has been implementing PURA pilot programs in many states. This initiative was succeeded by the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Rurban Mission.
