“The quality of their towers is excellent; their galvanisation plant is the largest in Africa, and their cost-effectiveness will allow us to expand our network more efficiently and effectively. This collaboration supports our operational goals and contributes to making manufacturing in Ethiopia the standard for Africa,” said Wim Vanhelleputte, CEO of Safaricom Ethiopia.
Ambitious Network Expansion Plan
This development follows Safaricom Ethiopia’s recent announcement of a $1.5 billion plan to construct 5,000 new towers over the next three years. The project aims to significantly enhance the company’s network infrastructure and provide reliable, high-quality telecommunications services across Ethiopia.
Safaricom Ethiopia operates around 2,800 towers, two-thirds of which are leased, while the remaining third are self-built. Adding new towers will increase coverage and capacity, facilitating better mobile and digital finance services access.
As of January 1, 2024, according to Data Report, Ethiopia had 24.83 million internet users, representing 19.4% of the country’s total population of over 129 million. The expanded network will increase internet penetration and improve connectivity for individuals and businesses.

The network expansion and Safaricom’s investment in locally manufactured towers underscore the company’s dedication to improving and expanding its services.
