Samsung Electronics's co-CEO, Han Jong-hee, dies of heart attack at 63

South Korea’s Samsung Electronics, revealed on Tuesday that Han Jong-hee, its co-CEO, passed away at the age of 63 from a heart attack, leaving a significant gap in the company’s leadership.

Han Jong-hee played a crucial role as the head of Samsung’s digital appliances division and device experience unit, overseeing both mobile phones and home appliances.

Han Jong-hee’s career with Samsung

Han began his career at Samsung in 1988 and steadily rose through the ranks, demonstrating exceptional leadership and innovation.

In 2011, he was appointed head of the visual display division’s product research and development team, where he played a key role in developing the company’s technology and product offerings.

His efforts led to his appointment as co-CEO in 2022, underscoring his profound impact on the company.

Samsung acknowledges Han’s contributions 

In a statement, Samsung acknowledged Han’s crucial contributions to the company’s rise to prominence in the television industry worldwide.

His commitment and strategic vision were essential in steering the organisation through difficult business environments and encouraging expansion and creativity in the face of turbulence.

Samsung expressed its condolences, stating, “Our deepest condolences are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

Just one week before he passed away, Han, one of Samsung’s four executive directors, hosted the company’s annual general shareholders meeting in Suwon, South Korea.

During the meeting, he addressed concerns about the company’s underperforming stock, demonstrating his dedication to transparency and accountability.

Jun Young-hyun to take over as sole CEO

In light of Han’s passing, Samsung announced that Jun Young-hyun, who was appointed co-CEO in November of last year, will now serve as the sole CEO.

As part of a leadership reshuffle in response to fierce competition in the semiconductor sector, Jun has been overseeing the memory chip division.

For Samsung Electronics, Han Jong-hee’s passing is a pivotal moment as the business considers his legacy and the influence he had on its expansion and success in the international market.
