With soaring fuel prices and rising transportation costs, many Nigerian riders are turning to electric alternatives that promise lower operating expenses and long-term savings.

Spiro, a growing player in Africa’s e-mobility space, is offering electric motorcycles that not only reduce maintenance needs by 40 percent but also cut daily commuting costs by up to 35 percent.

The electric two-wheelers are positioned as a cost-effective solution for low-income earners and commercial riders who depend heavily on motorcycles for transport and income.

Riders save more on running costs while avoiding the volatility of petrol prices.

Spiro’s multiple bike models for every budget and lifestyle

These electric bikes are not built for okada riders alone, as the company is expanding access to multiple user segments. These models range from the EKON 450 M1 and M2 for commercial use, to the Alpha+ for everyday commuting and a premium “Collectible” version for luxury users and bike enthusiasts.

While the entry-level models are focused on affordability and functionality, Spiro says the Alpha+ comes with features like a 7-inch smart LED screen, built-in speaker, and longer battery range, offering convenience for professionals and entrepreneurs.

The high-end Collectible version is designed for users looking for both performance and style.

Affordable, eco-friendly bikes with fewer parts and longer value

One of the key advantages Spiro highlights is the long-term cost saving on maintenance. Unlike petrol bikes, electric models have fewer mechanical parts, which means no engines, no oil filters, thereby reducing the risk of costly repairs.

“Electric bikes have minimal parts to work on. It is very easy and convenient for any rider to maintain the bikes, be it a commercial or personal rider. The expenses generally are 40 percent cheaper than any petrol bike,” Rahul Gaur, Spiro Head of West Africa said.

Smart tracking and better security for fleet operators

For fleet operators, logistics firms, and state governments, Spiro offers an added layer of control through its Cred Track technology. The platform gives users real-time data on bike usage, rider behavior, and battery performance.

Managers can set digital boundaries (geofencing), limit operating hours (time fencing), and even immobilise a bike remotely. According to Gaur, this technology is already in use by governments in Lagos, Ogun, Taraba, Niger, Gombe, Nasarawa and in Abuja.

Supporting national climate goals through e-mobility

Kaushik Burman, Chief Executive Officer of Spiro, emphasised that the company’s expansion into Nigeria aligns with the federal government’s goals to reduce carbon emissions and promote economic growth.

“Spiro’s expansion into Nigeria is driven by our alignment with the government’s goals to promote sustainable development, reduce carbon emissions, and boost economic growth,” Mr Burman said.

He added, “By introducing electric mobility solutions, we aim to positively impact the livelihoods of okada riders, who are a vital part of Nigeria’s transportation ecosystem. Our electric bikes will provide them with a more affordable, reliable, and sustainable means of transportation, reducing their operating costs and increasing their earnings. This, in turn, will improve their overall quality of life and contribute to the country’s economic growth.”

Call for government incentives to drive adoption

Spiro believes more Nigerians can benefit from electric vehicles if the right policy support is in place.

“There are countries in Africa that have banned the registration of petrol bikes and are promoting electric mobility for the public,” the company noted.

With expansion plans into states like Ondo, Oyo and Kaduna, Spiro is betting on a nationwide shift toward electric transport, starting with two-wheelers that fit seamlessly into the daily lives of millions.
