Zambia startup Save&Remit wins pitch competition at Africa Fintech Summit

At the Africa Fintech Summit, the startup company Save&Remit from Zambia was crowned the winner of the Alpha Expo pitch competition. The second-place finisher was a participant from Nigeria named Trade Lenda, while the third-place finisher was a competitor from Uganda named aXion Zorn.

At the Africa Fintech Summit, held in Lusaka, Zambia, Save&Remit, a fintech firm based in Zambia, emerged victorious in the Alpha Expo pitch competition. The company came out on top, taking home a cash prize of $2,500, after competing against 14 other new businesses. Trade Lenda, a company based in Nigeria, took second place with their digital bank solution geared toward small businesses. The company aXiom Zorn, based in Uganda, was awarded third place for its data analytics technology, which enables credit rating for small-hold farmers.

Save&Remit was established in 2020, and its core product is a mobile-friendly digital saving platform that caters to cooperatives and small- and medium-sized businesses. A digital ledger book, a digital identity, digital and financial literacy, disbursements, and security are all characteristics that are included in it.

“It’s great to win the pitch competition among such great other startups. In terms of our platform, we look forward to expanding beyond Zambia as research shows there is significant demand for the kind of service we offer,” founder Putty Muuka remarked. 

“The winners and other pitching startups are building products that are solving problems across multiple sectors,” said Amara Muoneke, one of the judges for the pitch competition. 

“You see the scalability in what they are building, and they also understand their customers and users very well,” she added.

Ms. Putty Kabango Muuka is a seasoned regional private sector development expert who brings 14 years of experience working in the corporate sector, specifically banks, and business member organizations. 

She has participated in both continental and continental-level projects in Africa. She was born and currently resides in Lusaka, Zambia, hence she is a citizen of Zambia. 

She has guided Save and Remit Services (SRS) to greater success as the company strives to become the preeminent traditional digital savings and payments platform in Zambia, Africa, and the world, advocating for traditional saving groups, cooperatives, and SMEs in Africa as part of financial inclusion. 

In 2022, the institution led a pilot effort to bring banking services to underserved areas outside of Lusaka through Financial Sector Deepening Zambia. It’s an online hub for boosting the productivity of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the region of sub-Saharan Africa. Facilitated local trade and promoted trade with neighboring countries for Zambia.
