Rural Zambia goes digital with Huawei partnership

The smart village project, launched in partnership with Huawei, aims to transform rural Zambia through technology. The first smart village site was completed in July 2024, providing electricity and internet access to homes, schools, and clinics.

This rapid development, achieved in just 30 days, enabled telemedicine and remote education services, revolutionising healthcare and education in these underserved areas. Huawei deployed micro solar power plants and RuralStar base stations and equipped schools with IdeaHub devices and electronic blackboards, further enhancing public services.

Felix C. Mutati, Zambia’s Minister of Technology and Science, emphasised the project’s alignment with Zambia’s Vision 2030, stating, “The digital transformation of Zambia is not only about technology — it is about the people, progress, and potential. It is about empowering the communities, bridging inequalities, and creating a future where every Zambian can contribute meaningfully to national development.”

The project highlights AI’s pivotal role in driving digital transformation. Li Junfeng, Vice President of Huawei and CEO of the Global Public Sector BU noted that AI is emerging as a key driver in enhancing national capabilities and improving citizens’ well-being.

He emphasised, “The extensive use of the DeepSeek model signifies not just a technological advancement, but also a fundamental shift in production dynamics”.

Huawei’s collaboration with international partners aims to propel digital government towards a smarter and more sustainable model. The smart village initiative is a benchmark for Africa’s rural digitalisation and underscores Huawei’s commitment to advancing global inclusive connectivity.

Over 200 industry leaders gathered at the event to discuss national transformation paths driven by digital technologies, reflecting a global trend of leveraging AI for improved public services.
