Snap has unveiled Snap OS 2.0, the latest version of its operating system designed for its AR glasses, Snap Spectacles.
This update introduces a native web browser, WebXR support, and other enhancements to improve user experience. Launching ahead of Snap’s planned consumer release of Spectacles in 2026, Snap OS 2.0 offers faster browsing and new ways to interact with content.
Snap OS 2.0 native browser revolutionises AR experience
Snap OS 2.0 comes with a fully revamped native browser that consumes less power and loads pages more quickly. It comes with a toolbar that allows users to write or speak website URLs, navigate history, refresh pages, and a redesigned home screen with widgets and bookmarks. Users can also resize their browsing windows like a laptop to facilitate multitasking.
According to Snap, “The portrait orientation of our Spectacles’ field of view is a perfect fit for vertical video, allowing you to enjoy content without ever having to look down at your phone”.
The browser also supports WebXR, enabling users to access augmented reality experiences directly from websites that support this technology.
Enhanced AR features bring content closer to reality
Beyond the browser, Snap OS 2.0 introduces the Spotlight Lens, which spatially overlays vertical video content into the user’s real-world view.
Users can anchor this content in place or have it follow their movement, offering a seamless media experience. Snap explains, “Easily anchor Spotlight in one place, or have it follow you as you move around”.
Additional features include gaming compatibility for games like Synth Riders, a Gallery Lens with an interactive layout for managing captures, and a Travel mode for stabilising AR material while moving. As Snap prepares for the general release of consumer Spec glasses in 2026, these features highlight Snap’s efforts to improve engagement and usefulness.
Snap OS 2.0’s debut reflects the company’s vision to integrate digital content smoothly into everyday life through AR, driving new ways for users to browse, watch, and engage hands-free.
