Spotify users have been waiting over four years for the company’s promised lossless audio tier, and recent discoveries in the app’s code suggest this wait may soon end. On June 18, 2025, technologist Chris Messina revealed new references to “lossless” streaming in Spotify’s desktop app code, indicating that the feature is actively developing and possibly nearing launch.

These code snippets mention “Lossless music, now in premium” and describe it as offering “the best sound quality on Spotify for music in up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz,” a standard for high-resolution audio.

Hidden clues in Spotify’s app code reveal lossless features

The newly uncovered code includes help cards designed to educate users about the lossless tier, warning th⁴at some songs may not be available in this format and that a stable internet connection is necessary for optimal playback.

Additionally, the app references “24-bit” and “FLAC” (Free Lossless Audio Codec) formats, confirming that Spotify plans to deliver true lossless streaming quality comparable to competitors like Apple Music and Amazon Music.

The code also suggests that lossless streaming will be supported on Spotify Connect-enabled devices and the web player, hinting at a broad rollout beyond mobile and desktop apps.

Spotify’s current highest streaming quality is “Very High” at MP3 320kbps, but the lossless tier will reportedly consume up to 1GB of data per hour due to its superior fidelity.

Users will need compatible headphones and wired connections to fully enjoy the enhanced sound quality.

The lossless tier is expected to be part of a new premium subscription, potentially called “Music Pro,” which may cost an additional $5.99 monthly on top of the standard Spotify Premium fee.

Spotify’s long road to lossless streaming

Spotify first announced its plans for a HiFi or lossless tier in 2021, but the feature has faced multiple delays and has yet to be officially launched.

CEO Daniel Ek has reaffirmed the company’s commitment to bringing a “deluxe” or “super premium” audio experience, but Spotify’s lossless tier will arrive years after similar offerings from rivals.

The recent code discoveries provide the most unmistakable evidence that Spotify is preparing to finally introduce lossless streaming, possibly before the end of 2025.

Given the long silence and scepticism surrounding Spotify’s HiFi tier, this development surprises many.

Yet, the detailed references in the app code demonstrate that the company is serious about delivering high-fidelity audio to millions of users worldwide.

With lossless streaming on the horizon, Spotify is poised to compete more directly with other platforms that have already embraced this premium sound quality standard.
