Spotify is moving towards a more interactive voice AI experience, promising users the ability to engage in natural, conversational ways with the platform.

On Tuesday, the music streaming giant revealed it is developing a voice interface that lets users talk to Spotify in plain English to request songs and playlists.

This evolution aims to make user interactions smoother and more personalised.

Chatty AI to boost user engagement

Spotify’s Chief Product and Technology Officer, Gustav Söderström, shared during the company’s second-quarter earnings call that the current AI DJ feature, launched in May 2025 for Premium users, provides key voice data enabling the company to link spoken commands with specific songs.

“This gives us a new dataset,” Söderström explained. “Spotify has a unique collection from playlists that connects songs, much like Amazon’s ‘people who bought this also bought’ feature.”

He added that the platform will offer “much more interactive” consumer experiences, expanding beyond simple voice commands to richer conversations.

The new voice AI interface will respond and understand context better, allowing complex tasks based on users’ listening history and preferences.

Söderström noted, “You can already write to Spotify and talk to it; that’s going to expand.”

Through generative AI, Spotify plans to enhance its capability to predict what users want to hear next, making the voice interaction feel more human-like and natural.

Voice AI backed by real human inspiration

Spotify’s AI DJ draws inspiration from actual voices. Xavier Jernigan, the company’s head of cultural partnerships, is the voice behind the AI DJ persona known as DJ X.

Launched in early 2023, this AI DJ carefully curates music and commentary tailored to listener moods and tastes.

Spotify’s innovation includes multilingual AI DJs, like DJ Livi, for Spanish audiences. Jernigan emphasised that while AI will evolve, the human-backed voice experience will remain familiar: “We will continue to innovate and evolve, but you can expect me to remain the voice for quite a while.”

This approach underlines Spotify’s commitment to making voice AI more intelligent, relatable, and engaging for users. As the technology advances, listeners can anticipate a more conversational and responsive interface that blends artificial intelligence with authentic human touches.
