In a world increasingly driven by technology, the Global Black Impact Summit (GBIS) 2023 highlights the significant role Black entrepreneurs are playing in reshaping the global tech landscape. With advancements in Information and Computer Technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, biotechnology, and machine learning, the impact of Black innovators in the tech industry is undeniable.

These visionaries are driving change and innovation, one groundbreaking invention at a time.

Recognizing Tech Pioneers

The contributions of Black entrepreneurs in the global tech sector are being recognized more than ever. Remarkable individuals such as Mark Dean, who made pioneering contributions like color PC monitors and the first gigahertz chip, have left a lasting mark on the industry. Ime Archibong, who rose to prominence within Meta (formerly Facebook), became the highest-ranking Black employee at the company, playing a pivotal role in guiding Meta’s innovations.

Nokwethu Khojane, a South African entrepreneur, founded Lakheni, a venture that leverages mobile technology to unite low-income households into buying groups to negotiate discounts. This innovative approach enhances economic efficiency and affordability, showcasing the transformative potential of #BlackExcellence in achieving economic equity and inclusion.

Challenges and Triumphs

Despite their remarkable achievements, Black entrepreneurs in the tech industry face unique challenges, including limited access to capital, bias, and underrepresentation. However, their determination, resilience, and innovative thinking have allowed them to thrive. To overcome the funding challenge, many have turned to alternative sources such as crowdfunding, angel investors, and grants. They have also become advocates for diversity in tech, striving to ensure that underrepresented voices are recognized and valued within the industry.

Abundant Opportunities

Opportunities in the global tech industry continue to expand for Black entrepreneurs, students, and investors. In fields like AI and Machine Learning, Black professionals are developing solutions that enhance performance and equity. Innovators like Renée Cummings, Founder and CEO of Urban AI, research the impact of AI on urban communities.

The sustainable tech sector offers avenues for Black entrepreneurs dedicated to eco-friendly solutions, renewable energy, and green infrastructure, contributing to a sustainable future. Monique Ntumngia, Founder of Green Girls Organization, trains women and girls to generate sustainable energy with the help of AI.

In the blockchain and cryptocurrency arena, entrepreneurs explore applications that create financial opportunities and broader access for underserved communities. Emmanuel Udotong, through his company Ancient Warriors, is building a blockchain security company to facilitate the safe onboarding of the next generation of crypto users.
