PowerCom, a division of Telecom Namibia, announced on Thursday the formal launch of a new mobile network tower at Oikokola in the Etayi Constituency.

The Honourable Governor of the Omusati Region and the Honourable Minister of Information and Communication Technology were among the many notable attendees of the event, which increases connectivity in the Omusati Region.

One of the important invitees was Dr. Stanley Shanapinda, CEO of Telecom Namibia.

He was there to support the initiative and confirm that Telecom Namibia had turned on 2G, 3G, and 4G mobile services on the tower.

Dr. Shanapinda, a guest speaker at the event, described the development as “a significant milestone in our ongoing mission to connect every corner of Namibia to reliable telecommunications services.”

He affirmed that the project is included in Telecom Namibia’s government-approved Integrated Strategic Business Plan (ISBP).

Telecom Namibia’s tower aligns with the government’s digital strategy

Additionally, Dr. Shanapinda stressed that the program is in line with the government’s recently unveiled “Digital Strategy”, which seeks to offer quick internet access.

He pointed out that with 2G, 3G, or 4G services, Telecom Namibia’s mobile network now remarkably serves roughly 93 per cent of the population.

The new Oikokola tower is anticipated to improve mobile coverage, turning what were once “dead zones” into essential connectivity hubs for local businesses and residents.

Improvement of connectivity

The CEO underlined that the construction of new towers, particularly in rural areas, greatly improves connectivity for businesses and citizens, promoting the growth of other companies and boosting the efficiency of communication throughout the nation.

“In short, connectivity is a catalyst for socio-economic growth. It helps level the playing field between urban and rural communities by bringing digital services and information right to everyone’s fingertips,” he added.

According to Dr. Shanapinda, the tower resulted from successful cooperation and a common goal amongst several parties, including the Local Authority, Powercom, and Telecom Namibia.

Telecom Namibia solely owns PowerCom, which has been making great efforts to grow its tower infrastructure in accordance with national development objectives.

About Telecom Namibia

Telecom Namibia Limited, the country’s telecom provider, was founded in August 1992 and is wholly owned by the Republic of Namibia’s government.

A subsidiary of its parent company, Namibia Post and Telecom Holdings Limited (NPTH), Telecom Namibia operated as a commercialised business until July 2025, when NPTH was essentially dissolved.

Since its modest beginnings in August 1992, Telecom Namibia has invested billions in cutting-edge networks.

Telecom Namibia employs 1115 people, provides services to over 480,672 fixed and mobile customers, and generates over N$1.4 billion in revenue annually. It operates the country’s biggest digital telecommunications network.

The company is a leading digital solutions provider, offering data, voice, and other supplemental services via data networks.

Telecom Namibia’s extensive communication services and solutions portfolio covers broadband, data, voice, and fixed wireline-based connectivity (copper and fibre).

The company also facilitates onward connectivity services for several neighbouring landlocked countries.
