Theory dominant South African telecommunications company, Telkom, has introduced 5G Internet Data plans as a 5G Wireless Broadband service. The plans are accessible in a few regions where Telkom 5G Broadband Network Coverage is present.

With better customer download and upload rates, 5G is the most recent generation of high-speed wireless internet technology. Due to this seamless and blazing-fast Internet connection, customers can experience better gaming, music, video streaming, and app downloads.

In October, Telkom launched 5G in collaboration with Huawei, making it the most recent operator to enter the rapidly expanding 5G market in South Africa.

More so, In preparation for the countrywide launch of its 5G network, an ultra-fast, superior internet connection that outperforms the earlier LTE and 4G connections, the operator claims it has spent the last 24 months meticulously building its 5G network capacity.

“On the 27th October 2022, we officially launched our 5G network at the DP World Wanderers stadium.  While it might appear that we haven’t been aggressive in our 5G rollout, we have quietly been gearing up to offer the most 5G-ready network in South Africa” Lunga Siyo, CEO of Telkom Consumer Business, stated at the official launch event.

“We already have the largest fibre network in the country, and with the recent allocation of the all-important sub-1GHz frequency spectrum, we are well-positioned to become an enabler of a connected society, so that all South Africans can be a part of the digital ecosystem,” states Siyo.

Customers in the 5G Broadband indoor coverage zone can purchase Telkom’s 5G Internet data plans on 24- and 36-month post-paid and Top-Up contracts. Clients will get a SIM card and a 5G router for locations with indoor coverage. Customers that reside in the outside coverage area will be provided with a SIM Card, a 5G Router, and Mesh Wi-Fi that will be expertly installed outside their residence or place of business to improve the indoor experience.

For R979 per month and a R99 one-time activation fee, the entry-level Indoor 24-month contract offers 50 Mbps data with a router, while the entry-level Outdoor 24-month plan offers 50Mbps, a router, Mesh Wi-fi, and outdoor installation for R1167 per month for 24 months.

Customers within Telkom’s 5G Broadband coverage area will be able to purchase Post-paid and Top-up plans from Telkom, and both residential and commercial customers will be able to do so.

The main goal of Telkom is to offer blazing-fast 5G fixed wireless access solutions. As the need for mobile 5G grows, Telkom will then supplement with suitable mobile propositions.

Uncapped 5G internet plans are also available from MTN, Vodacom, and mobile data-only network provider Rain, with varying speeds and costs.

The first operator in Africa to launch a commercial 5G network was Rain in September 2019.

Vodacom launched its 5G mobile network in May 2020 in three cities: Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Cape Town. MTN started operating its own 5G network in June 2020, starting with 100 locations.
