The top trending lists are revealed in Google’s Year in Search, an annual review highlighting what people search for to see, learn, and do.
According to this year’s Year in Search results, Nigerians are more interested than ever in politics, entertainment, sports, lifestyle, and famous people.
The 2022 Year in Search lists provides a quick glimpse of what Nigerians were interested in during a year that saw significant sports events, notable deaths, and the run-up to Nigeria’s election in February 2023.
The African Cup of Nations (AFCON) topped Google’s list of popular searches in Nigeria for 2022, according to the West African country.
AFCON and Brazilian footballer Casemiro led trending searches and top athletes and sportspeople, respectively. Nigeria lost 1–0 to Tunisia in the 2022 AFCON, while Senegal defeated Egypt to earn their first Africa Cup of Nations championship earlier this year. The Academic Staff Union of Universities‘ eight-month strike was Nigerians’ second-most-searched topic in the time under review.
Oxlade, a Nigerian singer and songwriter, topped Nigerians’ top popular personalities and artists searches this year. YBNL Nation Afrobeat artist Asake placed second in the top trending musicians’ list. Anikulapo, starring Kunle Remi and produced by Kunle Afolayan, was the #1 trending movie and series.
Questions similar to, “Who is Peter Obi’s running mate?” Who is the APC’s presidential nominee? ‘, ‘Who is Atiku’s running mate? Who is in the lead in the poll for the state of Osun? Who is Tinubu’s vice presidential candidate? Who is Peter Obi?’ and ‘Who is Peter Obi? ‘, demonstrate Nigerians’ growing interest in politics and the upcoming elections.
Entertainment-related search phrases, including “Finesse lyrics,” “Buga,” “Kizz Daniel featuring Tekno,” and “Will Smith” topped their categories, showing Nigerians’ love of lyrics, music, and celebrities.
Queen Elizabeth’s death was the most searched in a year with many high-profile deaths, followed by gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu’s April death and actress Ada Ameh’s August death.
