Unlimit has made a bold move in Tanzania by integrating the country’s top mobile money services, M-Pesa, Mixx by Yas, and Airtel Money, into its platform.

This announcement, made on Thursday, signals Unlimit’s commitment to connecting global brands with Tanzania’s rapidly expanding digital economy, where mobile money transactions now exceed $80 billion annually.

Unlocking Tanzania’s mobile money power for global brands

Unlimit’s integration taps into nearly 90 percent of Tanzania’s mobile money market, granting merchants access to over 120 million users across M-Pesa’s 60 million, Mixx by Yas’ 20 million, and Airtel Money’s 41.5 million clients. Irene Skrynova, Unlimit’s Chief Customer Officer, stated, “By continuously expanding our services and integrating dominant local payment methods, we ensure that both banked and unbanked users are fully supported.”

She added that this move “positions us to seamlessly enable international brands to enter and scale in this thriving market while empowering Tanzanian businesses to connect with their target audiences effortlessly”.

Tanzania is witnessing a shift from cash payments toward digital transactions, with Unlimit reporting a 76 percent growth in transaction volume between 2023 and 2024. This makes the country an increasingly attractive hub for businesses seeking seamless payment solutions that align with local preferences.

How Unlimit expands its Tanzanian footprint with mobile money

Unlimit entered Tanzania in Q2 2024 after receiving a Bank of Tanzania licence and opening a regional office. Adding M-Pesa, Mixx by Yas, and Airtel Money to its payment options now completes a comprehensive offering that includes international cards like Visa and Mastercard, regional payment methods, USSD payments, and bank transfers.

This expansion significantly enhances Unlimit’s ability to serve Tanzanian merchants, providing them with various payment options that reduce customer friction and increase market reach. The integration reflects Unlimit’s strategy to deepen local partnerships while supporting international brands scaling across Africa.

With Tanzania emerging as one of the decade’s fastest-growing economies, Unlimit’s moves position it as a key player in the region’s digital payments scene. This effort aligns with growing investor confidence in Tanzania’s fintech potential, as reflected by other companies like Visa setting up local offices recently.

By unlocking access to leading mobile money platforms, Unlimit enables a smoother, more inclusive payment experience for users and businesses, simplifying the path for global brands entering Tanzania.
