Vodacom Mpumalanga is investing R620 million in its network this fiscal year, marking significant progress toward digital inclusion.
This investment aims to increase network infrastructure, promote connectivity, especially in townships and deep rural communities, and show Vodacom’s dedication to creating a digital society where no one is left behind.
The region spent over R400 million in the 2024–2025 fiscal year, and it plans to pay an additional R620 million in 2025–2026 to expand broadband coverage across the province.
This investment, which will span two years and total more than R1 billion, is a component of Vodacom’s long-term goal to have the most dependable and expansive network available to all South Africans, regardless of where they reside.
Vodacom expands 4G and 5G sites rollout
Vodacom Mpumalanga is expanding the rollout of 4G and 5G sites, utilising licensed spectrum like L700, L1800, and L2100 to boost coverage and capacity in underserved areas in a province where remoteness and terrain frequently impede connectivity. With 41 per cent of the province’s 1,300+ mobile infrastructure sites linked to high-speed fibre, homes, businesses, schools, and government buildings can now access faster and more reliable internet.
The region has also invested in mobile network boosters, updated transmission technology, and backup power systems to address issues with Eskom grid instability, theft, and vandalism.
“Data traffic in Mpumalanga has increased by over 42 per cent year-on-year, with 90 per cent carried over 4G. As demand grows, Vodacom’s network investment improves connectivity for its regional customers and lays the groundwork for a more inclusive digital economy. By increasing coverage and capacity, we can ensure that all our customers can be empowered by technology, whether that is access to education and essential services, or helping the growth of enterprises, from SMEs to the public sector, through transformative digital solutions,” says Monde Ngcukana, Managing Executive for Vodacom Mpumalanga Region.
Vodacom addresses devices and data affordability
In addition to this infrastructure build-out, Vodacom addresses the affordability of devices and data, which are obstacles to meaningful digital participation. By providing consumers with a cutting-edge device financing model that allows them to buy a smartphone and, following a one-time deposit, pay it off in manageable instalments, Vodacom’s Easy2Own is increasing the number of people using smartphones.
Vodacom launched its R67 smartphone campaign in Mpumalanga and other select stores nationwide in July in observance of Mandela Day. Its continuous efforts to assist millions of South Africans in switching from rudimentary connectivity to 4G-capable phones include this initiative.
Additionally, the company lowers the connection cost with its Just 4 You and location-based Just 4 Your Town offerings, which offer personalised data based on a user’s usage patterns and geographic context.
Vodacom’s impact on the Mpumalanga public sector
Vodacom’s clever solutions are assisting the Mpumalanga public sector in operating more effectively and providing citizens with better services as part of its commitment to speeding up South Africa’s digital transformation. For instance, the SmartGov Platform offers real-time visibility and transparency by automating administrative processes.
Residents can report service issues using the SmartCitizen Engagement app, and government teams can respond more efficiently with the help of mobile-enabled field teams and multi-channel contact centres.
Vodacom’s Smart Utilities solutions have increased the accuracy of water and electricity metering and billing.
SmartPlaces and SmartBuildings are improving public infrastructure by facilitating improved energy use, water and pollution monitoring, and security.
Additionally, through clean audits and predictive maintenance, Smart Asset Management tools help local governments manage resources more efficiently.
Vodacom empowers Mpumalanga’s small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs)
Additionally, Vodacom empowers Mpumalanga’s small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) to create a flourishing local economy.
SMEs can compete in the quickly changing digital economy by using Vodacom Business to access cost-effective data bundles and digital tools like cloud hosting, cybersecurity, point-of-sale systems, and Internet of Things (IoT) technology.
VodaLend provides quick, flexible business loans up to R5 million for SMEs needing funding. These loans can be disbursed in as little as 24 hours and come with no early settlement penalties or collateral requirements.
Vodacom’s collaboration with regional contractors and security companies
Vodacom Mpumalanga collaborates with regional contractors and security companies to support local companies in their operations.
Local businesses primarily support Vodacom Mpumalanga’s network rollout, and partnerships with security companies have given many community members access to new employment opportunities.
“By removing barriers to access and partnering with government and business, we are giving the people of Mpumalanga the tools to learn, work, innovate, grow and connect to a better future,” concludes Ngcukana.
