On Thursday, AirConsole announced a ground-breaking partnership with Atari to bring iconic arcade games directly to automobile infotainment systems.

Volkswagen drivers can now play Asteroids: Recharged and Breakout: Recharged while their vehicles are parked or charging, turning downtime into an engaging gaming experience.

Classic Atari hits get a new home in cars

AirConsole, the Swiss-based gaming platform known for integrating games into cars, has partnered with legendary game publisher Atari to embed two modernised versions of its classics into Volkswagen’s infotainment systems.

The games are adapted from Atari’s Recharged series, designed specifically for quick, fun gameplay sessions ideal for the in-car environment.

Anthony Cliquot, CEO of N-Dream AG, AirConsole’s parent company, said, “Atari laid the foundation for generations of gamers. To welcome these timeless titles onto AirConsole shows that our vision for in-car play is being embraced by the world’s most trusted entertainment brands”.

The platform supports seamless play using the car’s built-in controls, making the experience simple and safe for users.

Breakout: Recharged refreshes the classic brick-breaking game with 50 challenge levels and power-ups, including rail guns and homing missiles.

It also enables cooperative play, allowing a passenger to join in effortlessly. Meanwhile, Asteroids: Recharged enhances the space shooter with challenge levels, upgraded weapons, and local co-op, perfect for quick bursts of activity during travel pauses.

Ethan Stearns, Vice President of Games at Atari, expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating, “The AirConsole team has a phenomenal track record of optimising the in-car controls and producing amazing playing experiences in vehicles. We are excited for Volkswagen drivers and their passengers to discover these modern versions of our classic titles”.

This partnership highlights a shift in entertainment, utilising the screen already available inside vehicles rather than relying on external devices.

As drivers spend more time waiting or charging, AirConsole’s approach transforms these moments into opportunities for social connection and play, integrating entertainment directly into the car experience.

With over 18 million players worldwide and collaborations with major car makers like BMW and Mini, AirConsole is fast becoming the go-to platform for accessible and instant gaming during travel.

This launch with Atari marks a new chapter in blending classic arcade fun with modern automotive technology.
