On Wednesday, Wahu Mobility, a Ghanaian electric vehicle (EV) startup, announced the launch of its new digital platform, the “Wahu Hero” app.

This app is touted as Africa’s first all-in-one companion for EV users, explicitly designed to support everyday transport workers who have transitioned from petrol to electric vehicles despite challenging road conditions.

Wahu Hero App: Empowering Ghana’s electric vehicle users

The Wahu Hero app aims to provide comprehensive support for EV owners, particularly motor riders, taxi drivers, and logistics couriers. Valerie Labi, co-founder of Wahu, emphasised that the app is built for “our heroes” — customers who have chosen electric vehicles as a sustainable alternative.

“They brave potholes, broken traffic lights, and unsafe roads, yet they keep going. This app is designed to support them,” she said.

The app allows users to purchase electric vehicles, select flexible payment plans, locate charging stations, buy spare parts, and receive ongoing support throughout their ownership journey.

Additionally, it rewards users with loyalty points and fosters a digital connection between customers, service providers, and financial institutions, creating a seamless ecosystem for EV ownership.

Driving sustainable mobility and financial Inclusion

Wahu Mobility has been at the forefront of transforming electric vehicle ownership in Africa. It partners with financial institutions like Letshego to make EVs more affordable. This collaboration focuses on providing accessible financing options, enabling more individuals and communities to embrace electric transportation.

The company’s ride-to-own model, which allows users to pay weekly or monthly, is tailored to Ghana’s growing gig economy. Riders like Lawrence and Akakpo have testified that Wahu e-bikes have improved their livelihoods by reducing fuel costs and providing flexible payment plans. One rider shared, “With the Wahu bikes, you don’t buy fuel, so it saves the forecast… I was able to rent my own room and take care of my family.”

Wahu’s manufacturing facility in Ghana produces locally designed and assembled electric bikes powered by solar energy, supporting eco-friendly urban transport. Each bike is equipped with innovative technology that monitors riding behaviour to ensure safety, including a system that can turn off the bike if unsafe riding is detected.

The launch of the Wahu Hero app marks a new chapter in Wahu’s mission to provide ethical, sustainable mobility solutions that empower riders and reduce carbon emissions. As Valerie Labi puts it, “We believe in a future free from petrol. We are Wahu! Charged with Freedom.”
