World Mobile Group, pioneering the first global mobile network powered by blockchain technology and the sharing economy, partners with Vodacom Mozambique to conduct an aerostat trial in Mozambique.

This innovative trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness and sustainability of aerostat technology in addressing connectivity challenges in rural areas, particularly focusing on the diverse and challenging terrain of Mozambique.

Tackling Internet Accessibility Challenges in Mozambique

In 2022, Mozambique, classified as one of the UN’s least-developed countries, faced significant barriers to internet access, with a low user rate of 23 percent. Particularly challenging was the situation in rural areas, where nearly 62 percent of the population resides. To address these challenges, World Mobile and Vodacom Mozambique initiated a joint trial in November 2023, actively assessing the viability of aerostat technology in real-world scenarios.

Aerostat Technology – A Connectivity Solution

The aerostat trial involves the deployment of tethered aerostats positioned 300 meters in the air, using custom radio payloads for last-mile connectivity. The technology enables individuals in rural areas to connect to the aerostat as a cell tower in the sky, allowing for phone calls and data usage.

This approach aims to overcome challenges related to terrain, infrastructure, and cost, expanding mobile networks in Africa with a standard cellular radius of up to 130 kilometers.

Strategic Partnership and Future Plans

Vodacom Mozambique, operational since 2003 with a customer base exceeding 10 million users, actively explores the potential of aerostat technology as a connectivity solution. Following the successful usage testing phase, plans include deploying multiple aerostats across Mozambique and potentially expanding to other regions. The partnership reflects a commitment to innovation and addressing the connectivity needs of underserved communities.

Micky Watkins, CEO of World Mobile, emphasizes the significance of the venture, stating, “Our aerostats could be the key to unlocking internet access for billions. This technology is not just cost-effective compared to legacy telecom infrastructure but also quick to deploy, making it ideal for remote regions.” Simon Karikari, CEO of Vodacom Mozambique, reinforces the dedication to innovation and connectivity, stating, “It’s about creating real change for people who need it the most.”

As World Mobile and Vodacom Mozambique collaborate on this groundbreaking trial, the focus remains on leveraging technology to overcome connectivity challenges and drive meaningful change in Mozambique’s rural communities. The trial’s success could potentially serve as a blueprint for expanding internet access in other regions facing similar obstacles.
