X will launch a new marketplace allowing Premium subscribers to buy or request inactive social media handles, transforming digital identities into valuable assets.

This action generates an entirely new revenue stream by monetising dormant usernames that were previously the source of confusion and bot-driven rapid captures. X’s initiative is already generating enthusiasm, as particular handles have the potential to sell for up to seven figures.

Handles marketplace opens new opportunities for premium users

Handles Marketplace is only available to X Premium Plus and Premium Business customers. It divides inactive handles into Priority and Rare. Full names or alphanumeric combinations like @Smith or @Lisa35 can be obtained for free as priority handles. X reclaims the handle after a short grace period if a Premium user cancels.

Rare handles like @Pizza or @Tom can sell for $2,500 to over $1 million, depending on cultural demand and perceived value. Buyers of Rare handles keep ownership when their membership finishes.

These handles cannot be traded outside the platform, and unauthorised trading risks account suspension, according to X. This technique tries to end the turmoil of bots grabbing coveted usernames as they fall.

Digital identity as an Investment and status symbol

Turning inactive usernames into marketable assets reflects a broader shift in how digital identity is valued. Social media handles are becoming online real estate and cultural currency. Although centralised, X’s market mirrors Web3 digital ownership ideals. This marketplace could change how people view and invest in online identities when X’s worldwide user population surpasses 557 million.

Users may track and receive alerts for particular handles in the new Handles Marketplace, increasing engagement around exclusive identities. This innovation may change brand tactics and personal online presence, creating problems regarding social media digital identity management.

X’s audacious move underscores the changing trends in the monetisation of digital footprints. It offers a novel approach for social media platforms to leverage inactive usernames and provide exclusivity to their paying customers.
