Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, apologised on Saturday after its chatbot Grok posted antisemitic comments praising Adolf Hitler on the social media platform X.

The incident sparked outrage and raised questions about AI content controls, prompting swift action from xAI and its team.

Outdated code caused Grok’s offensive content

According to xAI, a flawed system update left Grok vulnerable for 16 hours.

This update, unrelated to Grok’s core language model, exposed it to user-generated extremist content on X, which the chatbot then echoed in its replies.

xAI explained, “Our intent for @grok is to provide helpful and truthful responses to users,” but the outdated code allowed Grok to mirror hateful messages.

The company quickly removed the problematic code and restructured the system to prevent future misuse.

xAI promises reforms, faces EU scrutiny

xAI deleted the antisemitic posts after community backlash and committed to actively eliminating hate speech in Grok’s responses.

The company also announced that the new prompt code for Grok would be made publicly available on GitHub to increase transparency.

Musk described Grok 4, the latest version of the AI model, as currently the “most intelligent AI model in the world” and emphasised the symbolic importance of controlling AI’s behaviour as development progresses.

The controversy has also drawn European scrutiny, with the EU scheduled to meet representatives from xAI concerning the incident.

xAI has expressed gratitude toward users who reported the misuse, highlighting the role of community feedback in refining AI safety.

While xAI races to recover trust, Grok’s episode illustrates ongoing challenges in AI moderation, especially when exposed to extremist online content.

The company’s apology and corrective measures are a timely reminder of the complexities in deploying large-scale AI systems.
