Zamtel on Friday began its nationwide network upgrade project, starting with a completely renovated 4G/5G site in Chalala, Lusaka, to make good on its commitment to provide Zambians with faster, more dependable, and inclusive digital access.
Speaking at the launch, Jason Mwanza, CEO of Zamtel, stated that the upgrade will provide wider coverage for everyone and everywhere.
“We are connecting the whole country. This particular 4G/5G site we are launching today represents more than just technology. It’s about the opportunity for growth, innovation, and inclusion,” he stated.
“This is not just about improved signal strength. It’s about creating a more connected Zambia, where students, small businesses, and families can access the tools they need to thrive in the digital economy,” said Mr Mwanza. “We are proud to begin this journey in Chalala, with plans to extend this upgrade across the country.”
1000 schools to be connected in 4 months
According to Mr Mwanza, Zamtel will also connect 1,000 schools across the country in the next four months, giving thousands of students access to digital learning resources and high-speed internet wherever they are.
Honourable Felix Mutati, Minister of Technology and Science, who presided over the launch, praised the upgrade as a pivotal moment in the nation’s digital transformation initiative under the New Dawn administration.
“What Zamtel has done in Chalala is laying the foundation for an inclusive digital future,” said Hon. Mutati. “Faster internet will unlock access to online government services, educational resources, and economic opportunities, especially for our youth and entrepreneurs.”
He emphasised the significance of the acronym SPEED, which stands for Speed, Productivity, Education, Empowerment, and Digital Government, and encouraged young Zambians to use the increased connectivity to create, innovate, and engage in the global digital economy.
Zamtel’s commitment to Zambia’s digital transformation
Mr. Anthony Undi, the chairperson of the Zamtel Board, reiterated the company’s commitment to becoming a digital-first service provider, backed by investments in cutting-edge, scalable infrastructure.
“This upgrade demonstrates our commitment to innovation, service excellence, and national development. It is part of a bigger plan to modernise our operations and deliver best-in-class digital experiences to our customers,” said Mr. Undi.
Speaking on behalf of the CEO of Zamtel’s parent company, the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), Chief Financial Officer Mr Raphael Chipoma praised the contribution of technology partner Huawei to the upgrade and voiced strong support for the company’s transformation.
