Teenagers have been encouraged to proactively develop innovative ideas that can create significant impact and attract income.

This advice was shared during the Teen Tech Expo 2024, organised by the Teens World Foundation (TWF) in partnership with Plural Code.

The event, themed ‘Tech Beyond Borders: Empowering Tomorrow’s Tech Innovators,’ took place on May 28 and saw the attendance of over 500 students from various secondary schools across Lagos, alongside tech experts and enthusiasts.

Keynote Insights on the Future of Work

Dr Adaora Dagogo, the Managing Director of Stechad Ltd and the first keynote speaker advised students to be intentional about their education and to understand the evolving nature of the future of work. “It’s crucial for students to align their learning with the demands of tomorrow’s job market,” she emphasised.

Dr. Dagogo also highlighted the importance of stakeholder engagement, stating that parents and educators must encourage teens to develop skills in their areas of interest, whether in technology or other fields.

Calls for Improved ICT Education in Schools

Students lauded the Teen Tech Expo 2024 as a timely event that should be expanded. They urged government secondary school administrators to revamp ICT classes to better prepare them for the future. “We need to be equipped with the necessary tech skills to avoid being left behind,” one student remarked.

During the panel session, experts emphasised the importance of Artificial Intelligence, explaining that it is the future of human living that needs to be harnessed to ensure the efficiency of work processes instead of being seen as a threat.

They explained that as much as AI is to be embraced, there is a need for regulation, particularly to checkmate its use by students, as it portends the danger of making students addicted to it for answers compared to harnessing their minds.

The panellists also discussed the impact of technology in all sectors, highlighting the rise of fintech, health tech, and other industries in which technology is improving.

Teen UI/UX designer Jasper Ogunleye shared his experience on the importance of parental guidance. “My mum has supported me since my secondary school days when I showed interest in tech. She has helped me secure internships and work opportunities,” he said. “Parental support is crucial for helping children achieve their dreams early on.”

Maximising Knowledge for Future Success

Founder of TWF and convener of the Teen Tech Expo 2024, Kossy, advised the young attendees to maximise the knowledge gained and begin to apply it. “We have inspired the teens, and we expect that in the coming months, they will be better versions of themselves. It’s now their responsibility to put today’s knowledge to good use and explore their takeaways from the sessions,” she stated.

The event concluded with 20 students receiving scholarships to study various technology courses, including coding and robotics. Looking ahead, Kossy mentioned that TWF plans to support teen mothers with skill acquisition opportunities as part of their efforts to empower women and promote independence.
