Airtel Money, in collaboration with DTB Bank, Mastercard, and Network International, has introduced the Airtel Money Global Pay Card at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Kampala, marking a significant milestone for the country’s financial industry. The announcement was made on Tuesday.

By facilitating safe, easy, and borderless payments for Ugandans, the new virtual payment solution aims to transform digital transactions.

The increasing use of smartphones in Uganda and the way that digital solutions like the Airtel Money Global Pay Card remove traditional banking boundaries were highlighted by Japhet ARITHO, Managing Director of Airtel Money, during his remarks during the launch.

“With this innovation, anyone in Uganda can access a global payment card without needing a credit history. Parents can also use it to manage their children’s spending, providing security and control over transactions,” he said.

Importance of the partnership to launch Global Pay Card

DTB Bank’s managing director, Godfrey Sebaana, emphasised the importance of the collaboration by saying, “This collaboration between Airtel Money, Mastercard, and Network International is empowering Africa. Instead of carrying a physical card, customers can now obtain a digital card and use USSD to facilitate transactions in a secure environment.”

Lenin Sembo Oyuga, Mastercard’s Head of Digital Telco Partnerships for the Middle East and Africa, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to financial inclusion by saying, “Our vision is to create an inclusive digital economy. This partnership ensures that unbanked and underserved communities gain access to seamless financial solutions.”

The launch, according to Dan Edoma, Country Director of Network International, is an example of multi-partner collaboration and what can be accomplished when organisations come together to empower communities via creative solutions.

How to activate the Global Pay Card

Airtel Money customers can activate the Global Pay Card via USSD or the Airtel Money app, making international payments easier than ever.

The Airtel Money Global Pay Card is anticipated to help businesses, students, and regular consumers wishing to interact with international markets.

It offers instant transactions, strong security through PIN authentication, and the flexibility to transact across multiple digital platforms.

As digital payments continue to transform financial landscapes throughout Africa, this launch represents a significant step towards financial empowerment, convenience, and security for Ugandans.
