Algeria is set to revamp its air transport sector with the creation of a new domestic airline, operating as a subsidiary of Air Algérie.

This decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Wednesday, where officials assessed the state of the nation’s aviation industry, particularly focusing on Air Algérie and Tassili Airlines.

Algeria enhancing domestic air travel

The government’s decision to establish a dedicated domestic carrier aims to enhance connectivity within the country, especially to remote regions. Algeria, being the largest country in Africa by land area, often faces logistical challenges in domestic travel. By launching a specialised airline, the government intends to improve accessibility, ease congestion on existing routes, and provide better service to citizens.

The new airline will focus exclusively on domestic operations, allowing Air Algérie to concentrate on expanding its international reach. This strategic move is expected to strengthen Algeria’s presence in global aviation markets by reactivating long-abandoned routes to Africa, Eastern Europe, and Asia.

Air Algérie’s expansion plans

In addition to the domestic airline initiative, Air Algérie is already in the process of expanding its fleet. Last November, the national carrier announced the acquisition of 16 new aircraft, with the first delivery scheduled for June.

This fleet expansion will bolster both domestic and international operations, ensuring that Algeria remains competitive in the aviation sector.

With this ambitious restructuring, the Algerian government is taking decisive steps to modernise air travel, offering passengers more efficient and accessible transportation options while strengthening the national carrier’s financial stability and international presence.
