  • and Botswana’s communications regulator have signed a cybersecurity agreement.
  • The system searches the deep, dark, and open web in real time.
  • The collaboration also encompasses the sharing of knowledge and skills.

Keep reading for the full breakdown on BOCRA cyber threat monitoring — everything you need to know is covered below.

The Memorandum of Understanding, which outlines plans for collaborative efforts on threat monitoring, intelligence access, and incident response, was confirmed by both organisations in Cyble’s announcement.

The agreement grants the Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority (BOCRA) access to Cyble’s threat intelligence platform. The system searches the deep, dark, and open web in real time.

The system monitors malicious activity and identifies trends that might indicate danger.  This visibility enables a more proactive defence of vital networks and government services.

Update of Botswana’s digital systems

Botswana’s digital systems have been updated.  Cloud-based services, public sector applications, and telecom networks have grown.

Consequently, there is now a greater risk of disruptions and data exposure. The MOU aims to enhance national preparedness and accelerate regulators’ capacity to identify and respond to threats.

The collaboration also encompasses the sharing of knowledge and skills. Cyble will conduct workshops and training sessions for regional cybersecurity teams. At a time when more banks, retailers, government agencies, and service providers depend on digital platforms, this situation aids in the development of the nation’s talent.

Regional participation

In Southern Africa, Botswana is involved in several cross-border digital projects.  Stronger internal defences can enhance Botswana’s participation in shared infrastructure projects and data exchange systems.

A clearer understanding of threat trends can also support future regulatory decisions for digital platforms, internet service providers, and telecom operators.

Adding Cyble’s tools to BOCRA’s monitoring procedures and coordinating them with national incident reporting regulations could be the next steps.  BOCRA anticipates providing more information as it outlines how the MoU fits into its long-term cybersecurity plans.

Botswana’s cybersecurity standing

Botswana ranks 74th in the world with a score of 49.17 on the National Cyber Security Index (2025), indicating strong policy development (80%) but poor critical infrastructure protection (0%).

According to the Interpol Africa Cyberthreat Assessment 2025, cybercrime losses in Africa have surpassed $3 billion since 2019. Botswana is one of the countries that has made significant investments in awareness campaigns, AI-driven security tools, and updated legal frameworks.

Cyberattacks expose vulnerabilities in mobile networks, financial institutions, and government systems. The government’s efforts, which include international collaboration, national strategies, and training programs, have made Botswana one of the more technologically resilient countries in Africa.
