OPay, a leading Nigerian fintech company, on Monday , unveiled two new security features, Emergency Lock and Safety PIN, aimed at giving customers stronger protection and control over their funds amid rising concerns around digital payment security and account compromise.

OPay Emergency Lock Feature Blocks Transactions Instantly

With digital payments now central to everyday life in Nigeria, risks such as phone theft, robbery, and unauthorized transfers remain a growing concern. The Emergency Lock feature is designed to respond to these threats immediately.

It allows users to freeze their OPay account with a single tap whenever they suspect danger or suspicious activity. Once activated, the account is locked for 24 hours, during which all outgoing transactions, including transfers, bill payments, and card usage, are completely disabled.

The lock cannot be reversed during this period, not even by the user or customer support, ensuring full protection during emergencies.

Safety PIN Adds Protection Against Forced Transfers

The Safety PIN feature is designed to protect users in situations where they may be pressured or forced into making transactions against their will. Customers set up the PIN in advance and can use it when they feel unsafe or under coercion.

OPay’s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technology Officer, Dotun Adekunle, said the company developed the features to address real-life situations many Nigerians encounter, noting that every new innovation begins with finding better ways to protect customers while giving them greater confidence when using digital financial services.

“At OPay, every innovation starts with a simple question: how can we better protect and serve our customers? Emergency Lock and Safety PIN were developed to address real-life situations that many Nigerians face every day.”

Both features are accessible through the Security Centre in the OPay app, allowing users to activate protections quickly and in advance. The company says the update is part of its broader effort to improve digital safety and reduce fraud risks for millions of Nigerian users.
