Organisers say the initiative is structured to promote practical experimentation and validation, ensuring that funded ideas move beyond theory into real-world application. By backing short-term, results-driven projects, the programme seeks to fast-track innovation outcomes and strengthen Africa’s research and technology ecosystem.

Key Focus Areas for Applicants

Applicants are expected to propose projects that fall within three core areas: improving existing solutions, developing new tools, and generating high-quality datasets. For existing technologies, projects should focus on validation, optimisation, and scalability.

Those developing new solutions are encouraged to introduce fresh approaches or methodologies that address challenges within the FCI4Africa framework. Meanwhile, data-driven projects must demonstrate how datasets will support refinement, decision-making, and long-term system improvements.

The programme also emphasises measurable outcomes, requiring applicants to outline expected deliverables, timelines, and technical approaches clearly.

Funding Structure and Eligibility

The call will fund eight projects, each receiving up to €50,000. Eligible applicants include universities, research institutes, tech developers, startups, and R&D-focused SMEs. However, applications must be submitted by a single entity, as consortium entries are not allowed.

Applicants are also required to demonstrate their capacity to deliver both research and technological outputs while aligning closely with FCI4Africa objectives. Proposals will be evaluated based on innovation, feasibility, relevance, and expected impact.

Interested applicants are advised to begin by identifying ideas that align with FCI4Africa use cases. A strong proposal should clearly define objectives, methodology, expected outputs, and milestones. Budget plans must be realistic and within the €50,000 cap.

How to Apply for FCI4Africa Open Call 1

Applicants interested in the FCI4Africa Open Call 1 are required to submit their proposals digitally through the opencalls.fund platform.

All submissions must be completed before the official deadline of June 30, 2026, at 17:00 CEST (Brussels time). Late entries will not be considered.

By submitting a proposal, applicants automatically agree to the terms and conditions outlined in the Open Call 1 kit.

Before submission, applicants should confirm eligibility requirements and ensure their proposals highlight innovation, data generation, and practical implementation. Submissions will undergo a competitive evaluation process focusing on originality and technical strength.

Strengthening Africa’s Research Ecosystem

The FCI4Africa Open Call 1 underscores growing efforts to support applied research and innovation across Africa. By funding projects that combine technology development with data-driven validation, the initiative aims to boost collaboration between academia and industry while enabling scalable solutions.

With the June deadline approaching, stakeholders across the continent are being urged to submit proposals that deliver clear, testable, and impactful outcomes.
