Applications are now open for the 2026 Food and Energy Sovereignty Challenge, an initiative seeking startups, SMEs, and deep-tech firms with market-ready technologies that can strengthen Africa’s food and energy capacity. The application window closes on May 25, 2026.

Focus on African-Built Solutions

The challenge, themed “Rooted and Powered in Resilience”, is being coordinated by the African Union Commission’s Department of Economic Development, Tourism, Trade, Industry and Minerals. Organisers say the programme aims to support African-owned innovations that can reduce dependence on imported food systems, fuel supplies, and external industrial infrastructure.

The initiative comes at a time when many African economies are facing mounting pressure from global supply chain disruptions, high fuel costs, and dependence on food imports. Recent reports from international agencies have warned that disruptions in global trade and energy supply routes continue to expose vulnerabilities across African markets.

Applicants can submit projects under two tracks. The first focuses on food sovereignty innovations, while the second targets energy sovereignty solutions. According to the official call document, organisers are looking for technologies with proven functionality and strong potential for expansion across multiple African markets.

Eligibility Requirements for Innovators

The programme is open to citizens of African Union member states who lead legally registered businesses that are at least 51 per cent African-owned. Eligible organisations must also demonstrate technological readiness, with solutions already tested through working prototypes or existing market operations.

The African Union says selected innovators will gain access to support for industrial expansion, investor matchmaking opportunities, and engagement with government decision-makers. Participants may also join official trade and innovation missions organised by the continental body.

Successful applicants should present measurable outcomes, including job-creation potential, contributions to climate resilience, and scalable business models that serve regional markets. The programme also looks for solutions that align with broader African economic integration efforts under the African Continental Free Trade Area framework and Agenda 2063 priorities.

Push for Industrial Growth Across Africa

The launch reflects a broader push by African institutions to strengthen local manufacturing, agricultural processing, renewable energy production, and industrial self-reliance.

Experts say expanding African-built technology systems will play a greater role in improving energy access, boosting food production, and reducing the continent’s exposure to global market shocks. Innovation-driven industrial growth has increasingly become a major policy focus for governments seeking to create jobs and improve economic stability.

The African Union has encouraged innovators from across the continent and the diaspora to submit applications through its official application portal before the May deadline.
