The initiative will award 200 full scholarships to students aged 15 to 20 from around the world, offering them the chance to build STEM knowledge while working with peers across different countries.

Full Scholarships for Future STEM Leaders

The 12-week online programme focuses on sustainability, social innovation and intercultural learning. Developed by AFS in partnership with the University of Pennsylvania Centre for Social Impact Strategy, the curriculum combines live virtual discussions with self-paced learning activities and collaborative projects. Participants will also create and present a social impact project that tackles real-world issues, including climate change and the global energy transition.

The programme offers 100 scholarships to a global cohort of students. Another 100 places have been reserved for a Pan-African cohort, with 20 scholarships each for applicants from Angola, Ghana, Nigeria, Mauritania and Senegal. Funding is provided by BP to expand access to STEM education and global learning opportunities.

Eligibility and Programme Benefits

Applicants must be between 15 and 20 years old at the start of the programme, possess a strong interest in STEM, sustainability and intercultural exchange, and be able to participate in English. A computer or smartphone with internet access is required, although AFS says support may be available for students facing technology barriers.

Scholars who complete the programme will receive the Advanced Certificate on Global Competence for Social Impact, awarded jointly by AFS and the University of Pennsylvania Centre for Social Impact Strategy. Graduates will also gain access to the AFS Global STEM alumni network, which provides mentoring, networking, and professional development opportunities, and eligible participants may later apply to the AFS Youth Assembly.

Key Dates for Applicants

Applications opened on 2 June 2026 and will close on 2 August 2026. Successful candidates are expected to be notified by 14 August, with the virtual exchange scheduled to run from 31 August to 22 November 2026. The organisers estimate participants will spend around three to four hours each week on programme activities, allowing them to balance their studies with the online sessions.

AFS has encouraged applications from young women, refugees, displaced students, Indigenous communities and other under-represented groups. At least 20 per cent of scholarship places have been reserved for students from Indigenous communities as well as refugee and displaced populations, reflecting the organisation’s commitment to broadening access to international STEM education.
