The programme is led by the Infectious Diseases Institute and the African Population and Health Research Centre, with support from global partners, including Artificial Intelligence for Development Africa (AI4D), the International Development Research Centre, and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.

The challenge is structured as a four-week virtual innovation sprint in which selected teams will collaborate to build and test AI-powered tools using real-world datasets.
Participants will engage in expert-led sessions, mentorship check-ins, and collaborative design exercises, culminating in final project presentations.
Focus Areas for Innovation
Teams will choose between two key tracks: improving access to early pregnancy loss care and supporting informed contraceptive decision-making through intelligent digital tools.
These focus areas reflect ongoing public health concerns across the region, where access to reproductive healthcare services remains uneven. By applying AI, organisers believe that participants can develop solutions that improve decision-making, expand access to care, and enhance patient outcomes.
Opportunities for Young Innovators
Beyond technical development, the programme offers participants hands-on experience, professional mentorship, and access to a growing network of innovators across disciplines. It is open to teams of three to six members, who must combine technical and health-related expertise, with a requirement for gender inclusion in each team.
Applicants must be based in Sub-Saharan Africa and demonstrate a strong interest in applying artificial intelligence to health challenges.
Winning teams will receive financial support and the opportunity to present their solutions at Data Science Africa 2026, providing international exposure for promising ideas.
Key Dates and Application Details
Applications require a 300-word statement outlining the team’s experience and proposed solution. The deadline is set for May 3, 2026, with the programme running from May 11 to June 6.
Final presentations will take place on June 11, with winners announced shortly after. Selected teams stand to gain not only funding but also the chance to contribute meaningfully to improving reproductive health outcomes across the continent.
