Airtel Money on Thursday entered into a partnership with Spiro Uganda and gnuGrid CRB to launch the first AI-powered electric motorcycle lending market in Uganda. Yb

The innovative project, which was introduced at Four Points Kampala, will make it easier for Ugandans to own their own electric motorcycles for seamless transportation and mobility.

The launch’s overall goal is to encourage credibility among Mobile Money users in order to improve credit scores and lower borrowing costs; if more people are good payers, borrowing costs will also drop.

Partners express enthusiasm

The debut was a game-changing event for Africa, according to Gaurav Anand, Managing Director of Spiro Uganda.

“We are automating bike purchasing—from the down payment to the final transaction—making ownership easier,” he stated.

Spiro Uganda’s Deputy Managing Director, Bruce Mucunguzi, emphasised how Spiro’s electric mobility solutions had helped cut greenhouse gas emissions by 21,000 tonnes.

“This initiative expands access to electric transport and financial services, eliminating barriers to ownership,” he said.

The financial gap in Uganda was highlighted by Opio Obwangamoi David, Executive Director of gnuGrid CRB, who pointed out that over 22 million Ugandans are still unbanked.

“With only 2.5 million people served by traditional banks, alternative financial solutions are essential. This innovation enables individuals to access loans through Airtel Money,” he said.

The Managing Director of Airtel Money, Japhet ARITHO, emphasised how digital connectivity affects loan availability.

“Telecom data now allows us to assess customers’ ability to pay, eliminating the need for collateral and making loans more accessible,” he explained.

Spiro Uganda Group CEO Kaushik Burman emphasised how the project has the ability to change people’s lives.

“Without mobility, financial inclusion remains out of reach. This partnership ensures more people can access affordable transport and credit,” he said.

Electric motorcycle ownership made easier with home charging kits

Spiro Uganda has also made owning an electric motorbike easier by introducing home charging kits and fast-charging battery exchange facilities.

The Airtel collaboration between Airtel Money, Spiro and gnuGrid serves as an example of how electric vehicles and financial technology may promote sustainable development.

With more job possibilities, lower emissions, and more accessible loans, this program raises the bar for Uganda’s banking and transportation industries.
