The integration allows users to link their Visa cards to ChatGPT and let the AI search, select, and buy products in real time, while Visa handles authorization and fraud protection behind the scenes.

Payments giant Visa has embedded its payment network inside ChatGPT, empowering the chatbot to independently shop and complete transactions on behalf of its users. The move marks a turning point for AI-powered commerce, giving everyday shoppers a hands-free buying experience at potentially any merchant that accepts Visa.

AI agents can now not only recommend products but complete purchases on the user’s behalf, removing the friction between browsing and buying entirely.

How ChatGPT Shopping Works With Visa

Getting started is straightforward. Users link their Visa cards directly to ChatGPT through the app’s settings. Once connected, the AI agent can receive shopping instructions, search for products, compare options, and complete the transaction, all within a single conversation.

OpenAI provides the technology that allows agents to interact, make decisions, and initiate purchases through ChatGPT. Visa, the world’s largest payment network outside of China, handles the payment authorization and fraud monitoring needed to do this at scale.

To shop, a user simply tells ChatGPT what they need. Visa’s chief product and strategy officer, Jack Forestell, demonstrated this at a company event in San Francisco by showing a ChatGPT user asking the bot to find a pair of wireless headphones for less than $150. The bot locates and purchases the item based on those instructions alone.

“As AI agents become active participants in the economy, Visa’s focus is to ensure transactions are trusted, secure and seamless,” said Forestell.

Unlike earlier attempts at AI-driven checkout, which were confined to a single retailer or a small set of enrolled merchants, ChatGPT’s Visa integration works across any merchant that accepts Visa.

Human Approval and Security in ChatGPT Visa Payments

Every purchase made through ChatGPT via Visa’s network includes a human approval step. Agents send notifications for consumers to approve each purchase before it goes through, keeping users in control at every stage of the transaction.

“I think we’re generally at a place where most people are very comfortable with the shopping aspects of it and have discovered this as a superior discovery experience,” Forestell said. But making the leap from recommendations to actual purchasing “just requires a whole different level of trust.”

Visa’s fraud monitoring runs in the background on every ChatGPT transaction, applying the same security standards used across its broader global network. For merchants, the integration makes it easier to accept AI-initiated transactions, expanding their reach to a growing base of ChatGPT shoppers.
