The volunteer initiative offers contributors the chance to publish research, gain editorial experience and collaborate with an international network of scholars working across area studies and digital humanities. Applications close on 19 July 2026.

Opportunities Across Multiple Disciplines

The Digital Orientalist is recruiting leading contributors, guest contributors and members of its social media and web teams. The publication is seeking applicants whose work combines digital humanities with regional or area studies, including African, Central Asian, Chinese, Middle Eastern, South Asian and Southeast Asian studies. It also welcomes applicants from related fields such as Oceania, Pacific Island studies, archival studies and digital heritage.

According to the organisers, applicants must demonstrate a clear connection between their work and digital humanities methods, tools or theoretical approaches. The publication aims to broaden discussions on how technology can support research and teaching across diverse academic disciplines.

Roles for Writers and Digital Specialists

Contributors selected for the programme will produce accessible articles for an international audience between September 2026 and May 2027. Leading contributors are expected to submit between five and six articles during the academic year, while contributors will write three to four pieces. Guest contributors will prepare two articles, although one-off submissions remain welcome throughout the year.

Beyond writing, the organisation is also seeking volunteers to manage its social media channels, edit its monthly newsletter and improve its website. These positions offer practical experience in academic communication, digital publishing and community engagement.

Who Should Apply

This opportunity is for graduate students, early-career researchers, and scholars looking to expand their academic profiles and build international connections. Participants will have the chance to publish research in an accessible format, work with experienced editors and engage with a global community of digital humanities specialists.

The Digital Orientalist emphasises that all positions are voluntary and do not include financial compensation. However, organisers say the programme offers valuable professional development through publishing, editorial training and collaborative projects.

Applications must be submitted through the official online form by 19 July 2026. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to remote interviews after the closing date, with successful applicants joining the editorial cycle for the 2026 to 2027 academic year.
